Belmont junior Jake Wedig was the shot put at Thursdays D3 Bangor Sectional. He also qualified for state in the discus with a third-place finish.

BANGOR — Belmont junior Jacob Wedig earned his first trip to the state meet after throwing his way to state berths in both the shot put and discus at the WIAA Division 3 Sectional Track and Field Meet hosted by Bangor High School on Thursday.

Wedig won a sectional title in the boys’ shot put with a winning heave of 51’4½” and he added a state berth in the discus by finishing third overall in 147’11”.

“Jake works very hard and deserves all that he can accomplish,” said Belmont throws coach Dave Kamps.
Wedig is seeded fourth in both events heading into the 2017 WIAA State Track and Field Meet, which will be held at UW–La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday, June 2–3. He will kick off the competition by competing in the discus on Friday morning starting at 9:30 a.m., and he will compete in the shot put on Saturday afternoon.

“Jake is a great kid and an amazing athlete,” said Braves’ head coach Amber Eisele. “He has such a drive and motivation to accomplish anything he sets his mind to. No matter what the obstacle is he overcomes it and does his best. He has fought hard to stay at the top this year across our division and he has done just that. I can’t wait for state and watch him compete there with all the competition to motivate and push him even further. I am very proud of how he did last night.”

Junior Isaac Wiegel finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in a personal-best time of 53.79 and he helped the Braves’ 3,200-meter relay team finish two spots higher than their seed position as they placed eighth in 9:01.03. Joining him on the relay team were sophomores Andrew Weber and Seth Peters along with freshman Tristen Gilbertson. Freshman Zach Mester ran a leg of the 4x800 relay for the Braves at regionals to help locked up the sectional berth.

“We had to put in our alternates at both the regional and sectional, and they both ran outstanding for not running the relays during the main season,” said Coach Eisele. “They dropped almost 10 seconds from regionals to sectionals. I am so proud of those boys.”

Sophomore Elsie deHaan is the lone member of the Lady Braves to compete at sectional, finishing 13th in the discus with a best toss of 98’10”.

“Elsie had a great season with her throws. I can’t wait to see how she excels into next year,” said Eisele.
The Potosi track and field season came to an end at Thursday’s Bangor Sectional.

The Chieftains, who are in their first year of postseason competition since 2003 when they were part of a co-op with Lancaster, qualified 10 events for sectional competition, but non finished in the top four to qualify for state.
Potosi was ineligible for postseason competition a year ago in its first season as a stand-alone program.

Freshman Nelson Bauer placed 11th in the 3,200 (11:04.18). Senior Christian Bauer placed 14th in the 300 hurdles (46.43), freshman Jeffrey Jacobson finished 14th in the 100-meter dash (12.16) and freshman Tyler Thingvold took 15th in the 400 (58.02).

The Potosi girls’ 4x200 relay team of sophomores Maggie Schmitz, Lily Reynolds, Brittany Horner and junior Madelyn Kruser finished sixth (1:53.77).

Junior Grace Morgan also placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 32’9”. Senior Brooke Dressler placed eighth in the 800 (2:36.96), Reynolds finished ninth in the 300 hurdles (51.02), while Schmitz took 10th in the 100 hurdles (17.93).

The Potosi girls’ 4x400 relay team of Schmitz, Dressler, Reynolds and Kruser placed 10th at 4:29.85.
