Belmont's Wedig sweeps throwing events at Six Rivers Conference meet

Belmont senior Jannie deHaan won an individual conference title Monday afternoon in the girls high jump by clearing 4'10".

      PLATTEVILLE — Belmont senior Tucker Wedig swept the boys’ throwing events for the third year in a row at the Six Rivers Conference Track and Field Meet.

     Wedig claimed the shot put title with a top throw of 56’5”, and then went on to capture the discus title with a winning heave of 147’0” to lead the Braves at the annual conference showcase held on a cold and windy day at UW–Platteville on Monday.

     Belmont finished sixth overall in the boys’ meet with 30 points thanks to Wedig’s efforts.

     Senior Jannie de Haan earned the lone conference championship title for the Lady Braves with a winning mark of 4’10” in the high jump. Belmont also finished sixth in the girls’ meet with 34 points.

     Senior Keegan Kamps placed second in the girls’ discus (97’9”), while senior Rebecka Ljungberg came in seventh in the shot put (23’2”) for the Lady Braves.

     Freshman Taylor Reuter finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run (6:16.25), sixth in the high jump (4’2”) and seventh in the 800 (2:53.91). Freshman Taylor Foecking added a fifth in the 800 (2:50.43), while sophomore Maddie Travis was eighth in the 200 (30.44).

     Freshman Jacob Wedig finished fifth in the shot put (40’5”), sixth in the discus (110’7”) and seventh in the 400-meter dash (59.99) for the Braves.

     Sophomore Josh Adams placed eighth in triple jump (33’4½”) at Monday’s meet.

     Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg swept the team titles for the third year in a row. The girls’ team won 14 of the 18 events to take home the crown with 255 points, and the boys’ team won six events and snagged the title with 178 points.

     River Ridge was a distant second in the girls’ meet with 125.5 points, and Albany was third with 101.5 points.

     Albany placed second in the boys’ meet with 137 points, followed by Cassville at 124 points and River Ridge at 107 points.

     Belmont will participate at the WIAA Division 3 Cuba City regional meet on Tuesday, May 26, starting at 3:30 p.m. The top four competitors in each event advance to sectional competition.
