Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg girls, Darlington boys claim titles at Glendenning Invite

Junior Paige Murphy set a new team and meet record to win the long jump (16'7.75") at Monday Richard Glendenning Invitational in Monroe on Monday.

MONROE – The area track and field teams got outside for the first time this season and the fresh air did the teams well as Darlington ran away with the boys’ team title and Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg captured the girls’ crown at the 2016 Richard Glendenning Green-Lafayette County Invitational hosted by Monroe High School on Monday, April 11.

The Redbirds won five events and rolled up 166 points to claim the boys’ title for the second year in a row. BSMS added five firsts en route to a second-place finish (123.5) ahead of Monroe’s White team (104) and Monroe’s Red team (102.5). Belmont placed eighth (18) and Black Hawk tied for 10th (1) at the 11-team meet.

BSMS posted four firsts on the way to the claiming the girls’ title for the second straight season with 142 points. Monroe Red won seven events and placed second (119) ahead of Darlington (94) in third. Belmont was ninth (20) and Black Hawk was 11th (7).

Grady Rielly swept the boys’ hurdles winning the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.5 seconds and the 46.06 seconds. Conner Hackett finished first in the 3,200-meter run (10:36.89) for Darlington, and the Redbirds’ 800-meter relay team of Kameron Blosch, Trevor Johnson, Conrad Blosch and Hunter Johnson added a first (1:40.52).

Mitchell Wagner won the high jump (6’0”) for the ‘Birds, and he added seconds in the triple jump (40’0”) and the 300 hurdles (47.91) and a third in the 110 hurdles (18.7).

Kyle Pulvermacher earned three firsts for the Zephyrs by winning the 100-meter dash (11.5) and the shot put (52’9.75”) and teaming with Zach Wiegel, Lance Lierman and Ben Sigwarth to win the 400 relay (48.22). Pulvermacher also placed second in the discus (148’6”).

Joel Fawcett tied the meet record in the pole vault with a winning height of 12’0”, while Lierman added a first in the long jump (18’7.5”) and joined with Sigwarth, Fawcett and Alan Montayne to take second in the 800 relay (1:44.17).

Belmont got a pair of thirds from Jacob Wedig in the shot put (42’5”) and the discus (138’8”) and Josh Adams in the high jump (5’4”).

Black Hawk’s Josh Quinn placed eighth in the discus (99’1”) to account for all the Warriors scoring at the meet.

In the girls’ meet, the Lady Zephyrs turned in a pair of record-setting performances en route to the title. Paige Murphy won the long jump with a record-breaking leap of 16’7.75”– which also established a new tri-op record in the event as well– and she combined with teammates Lindsey Walton, Payton Bastian and Ally Jansen to win the 400 relay in a record 53.35 seconds.

Katie Pingel won the triple jump (33’3.25”) and Brianna Leahy won the shot put (33’7”) for BSMS.

Taryn Rankin won the discus (99’1”) for Darlington, while the Lady Redbirds’ 3,200 relay team of Meghan Douglas, Reghan Komprood, Carly Langkamp and Ilse Mendez added a first in 11:00.73.

Elsie de Haan was second in the shot put (29’11.5”) and seventh in the discus (82’0”) to lead the Braves. 

Haley Gertsch was fourth in the 400 (1:10.84) and seventh in the 800 (2:53.44) for the Warriors.

Last week’s weather conditions called off Tuesday’s meet at Cuba City and Thursday’s meet at Darlington. No information on make-ups dates was available at press time.

Upcoming track and field meets will see Belmont at the Lancaster Invitational and BSMS and Black Hawk at the Cassville Meet, both on Thursday, April 14.

BSMS will also compete at the Riverdale Invitational in Port Byron, Ill., on Friday, April 15, while Belmont is at the Prairie du Chien Invitational on Monday, April 18.

The Braves, Zephyrs and Warriors will all attend the River Ridge in Bloomington on Tuesday, April 19.

Darlington is off until April 22.
