Two Braves place 2nd at Raider Scramble

BELLEVILLE — After opening the SWC duals season with a 54-18 loss to Richland Center last Tuesday, the Belmont/Platteville wrestling team returned to action Saturday at the eight-team Sugar River Invitational the Raider Scramble.
With just seven wrestlers in their lineup, the shorthanded Braves held their own on an individual basis, but as a team struggled to score points with a half-vacant line-up.
Belmont/Platteville scored 62 points and finished eighth as a team– Mount Horeb/Barneveld won the team title with 195 points– but earned four top four finishes.
Platteville senior Vinny Anderson (5-1) and Belmont junior Lucas Stoney (7-3) both finished the day with second-place finishes at the tournament that was half round-robin pool wrestling and half single-elimination tournament, Anderson at 182 pounds, Stoney at 220.
Belmont junior John Hentrich (6-5) finished fourth at 138, as did Platteville’s Peter Holloway (4-7) at 145.
“The team is coming along very well,” said first-year coach Andrew Campbell. “ We are fighting off some sickness and ringworm at the moment, but all of our new guys seem to be coming along nice. We still have a long ways to go but we can see improvement in them every day in practice.”
Anderson went a perfect 3-0 in his round-robin pool with a decision, a pin and a 7-3 double overtime victory over Monroe’s Dusty Burkhalter to reach the four-man championship bracket.
He defeated Cuba City/Southwestern’s Forrest Thill, 8-5, in the semifinals, before suffering a 10-3 loss to Brodhead/Juda’s Hunter Colden in the 182-pound title match.
Stoney overcame a 10-7 loss to Sugar River’s A.J. Halbach in his first round-robin match with back-to-back pins to reach the championship round, where he pinned Sugar River Reserves’ Manuel Gomez in 1:28 to make the finals.
Stoney dropped a 7-3 decision to Monroe’s undefeated Trevor Gorr (11-0) in the 220-pound championship.
“Both had amazing days,” added Campbell. “Vinny wrestled very well and had to win a match in double over time in his second match of the day. When he got to the finals he had to wrestle Hunter Colden from Brodhead Juda, who is ranked number one in the state. He lost by a final score of 10-7, but proved that he can wrestle with the best kids around.
Lucas was able to come back after a first round loss of the tournament to win his pool and make the championship bracket and the finals. In his finals match, he had to wrestle Trever Gorr from Monroe, ranked number two in the state. Lucas lost the match when he got taken down in the final 30 seconds. Again, we proved that we can wrestle with the best kids around.”
The Braves will travel to Dodgeville on Friday, Dec. 14, for another SWC dual, starting at 7 p.m. and the Braves will take part in the Richland Center Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 10 a.m.
