Black Hawk returns with a vengeance

SOUTH WAYNE – Black Hawk doesn’t like the taste of losing, so after tasting it for nearly a week the Lady Warriors were more than happy to get that taste out of their mouths.
In their first game back since suffering a loss to Barneveld, the Warriors used their offensive balance and defensive intensity to get back to their winning ways with a 48-31 Six Rivers East victory over the visiting Argyle Orioles at BHS on Thursday, Feb. 23.
The #5-ranked Lady Warriors (18-2 overall, 10-1 in SRE) gained control early by jumping out to a 14-5 first quarter advantage, then used an 18-7 run in the second quarter to build up a 32-12 halftime lead.
Argyle (6-15, 4-7), which managed just two made field goals the entire first half, made things interesting by outscoring the hosts in the third quarter, 13-5, to trim the deficit down to 37-25; however the Warriors put the game in cruise control the rest of the way.
Senior center Kate Quinn led Black Hawk with 11 points, while senior forward Cortney Gilbertson paced the Orioles with 11 points as well.
Sophomore guard Jen Wellnitz added eight points, eight assists and six rebounds, and senior guard Katie Powers chipped in with seven points, seven assists, four rebounds and four steals for the hosts.
Chaesta Shager tallied six points and five boards and Kayla Meier registered five points and seven boards, while Michelle Flanagan added a season-high five points for the Warriors.
Black Hawk hosts Juda (15-6, 7-4) in their regular season finale on Thursday, March 1. A win would give the Lady Warriors a share of their fourth consecutive Six River East championship title.
The Warriors were seeded first in their sectional bracket for the upcoming WIAA Division 5 tournament and they will host #16-seeded Green Lake (3-15) in a regional quarterfinal contest on Tuesday, March 6, starting at 7 p.m.
Black Hawk will host the regional semifinal game on Friday, March 9, and the regional final game on Saturday, March 10, if they win their previous game.
