Black Hawk starts East with sweeps over Ponies and Panthers

    SOUTH WAYNE – A good night at the service line allowed the Black Hawk volleyball team to open their Six Rivers East season with a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Monticello Ponies in a match played at BHHS on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
    The Warriors (overall, 2-0 SRE) used extended scoring runs in each set to roll to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-11 sweep over the Ponies. Freshman Bailey Butler served up five straight points to snap a nine all tie in set one, and senior Hannah Ritschard added a four-point run later in that game to put the hosts ahead 21-13. B. Butler, Ritschard and senior setter Hannah Herbst each had an ace in set one.
    Sophomore Hannah Butler rallied the Warriors to victory in set two by serving up the final eight points, including an ace, to put her team up 2-0; and the aces kept coming for the Warriors in set three with junior Sydney Delzer recording back-to-back aces to put them ahead 7-4 early.
    Junior Savanna Burmeister reeled off seven straight points with a pair of aces to extend the Warriors’ lead to 15-5, and then H. Butler ran off six straight points with two more aces to put the hosts up 22-6.
    H. Butler finished with four kills and four blocks to lead the Warriors at the net, while Herbst and sophomore Maddy Huschitt distributed five assists apiece for Black Hawk.
    At Juda, on Thursday, Aug. 31, the Lady Warriors kept it rolling in their second SRE match of the week, getting stronger as the night went on en route to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-11 sweep over the host Panthers.
    Bailey Butler pounded down a match-high 12 kills to lead the Warriors on the night. Hannah Herbst handed out 15 assists in the match, while Sydney Delzer recorded four blocks and Savanna Burmeister served up three aces for the victors.
    Black Hawk has upcoming Six Rivers East matches at Pecatonica on Thursday, Sept. 7, and at Barneveld on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Lady Warriors will also compete at the annual Lancaster Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9, starting at 9 a.m.
