Potosi catcher Abby Ames stretches to make a catch at home, but unfortunately it wasn't in time to prevent a Belmont player from scoring a run during last Wednesday's Six Rivers conference contest. The host Braves handed Potosi a 4-2 loss, giving them a 3-1 league record, while the Braves improved to 4-0.

BELMONT - The most fierce rivalry in Six Rivers West softball competition was renewed last Wednesday evening when the Potosi Chieftains and Belmont Braves put their 2-0 conference records on the line.

After seven innings of hard-fought softball, the host Braves pulled out a 4-2 victory over the Chieftains, giving coach Eric and Sarah Steiner’s squad their first league loss of the season.

The Chieftains (3-1, 7-4) drew first blood with one run in the top of the second inning, but the Braves (4-0, 7-1) put the heat on by scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth.

Trailing 3-1, Potosi scored another run in the top of the sixth, which Belmont answered in the bottom half of the inning.

When the Chieftains failed to score in the top of the seventh, Belmont secure the win and remained unbeaten in league play.

Senior Jenna Kruser led the Chieftains with two hits in three plate appearances, a Potosi finished the game with five hits to Belmont’s seven.

Junior pitcher Emilie Rojemann collected the loss in the circle, giving up four runs off seven hits, while striking out eight batters and walking two.

Kalyn Kamps got the win for Belmont, striking out nine Potosi batters and walking none.

One night earlier, the Chieftains collected a 12-4 victory over host Shullsburg/Benton, as Potosi pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of their opponent’s seven errors.

Senior catcher Abby Ames had a spectacular game, going 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and three runs scored. She also had a home run in the contest.

Going 4-for-5 in the game with two RBIs and one run scored was Clara White, while McKenzie Brown and Dawn Dines each went 3-for-5, Dines with two RBIs and Brown with one.

Collecting the win in the pitching circle was Emilie Rojemann, who in seven innings of work, gave up two earned runs off six hits, while striking out six batters and walking one.

In non-conference action, Potosi suffered a 5-0 loss to host Barneveld last Friday, then a 5-2 loss to host East Dubuque on Saturday.

Against Barneveld, the Chieftains had five hits and were led by Ames (2-for-2) and Jenna Kruser (2-for-3).

Rojemann took the loss after giving up four runs, while striking  out two batters and walking four in four innings of work.

Emily Langmeier pitched the final two innings, where she struck out one batter and walked three, while giving up one run.

Against East Dubuque on Saturday, coach Steiner’s squad was held to three hits, Ames getting two of them in four at bats.

Langmeier took the loss in the pitching circle.

This past Monday evening, Potosi improved on its conference record with a 16-5 victory over visiting Highland.

The Chieftains finished the game with 13 hits, as Dawn Dines went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Adding two hits each were White, Bausch, Brown and Kruser, as Brown had three RBIs, Kruser two and White two.

Rojemann picked up the win in the pitching circle, striking out five batters and walking two, while allowing three earned runs off eight hits.

This Friday evening, the Chieftains will take to the road against Cassville/River Ridge. They will then host Belmont on Tuesday, May 7.
