POTOSI — “Our defense played extremely well, while the offense did just enough to come away with the win.”

Those were the words of Cassville football coach Doug Fure after last Friday night’s 13–6 victory over host Potosi.

Along a wet, muddy field in the pouring rain, the Comets did indeed play well enough to improve their Six Rivers Conference record to 2–0, while the Chieftains fell to 0–2 with the loss.

Two touchdowns for the Comets was enough to pick up the win, as their defensive unit limited the Chieftains to 167 total yards of offense and one score.

Cassville got on the board with a 13-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Cam Jensen. Gus Hetcher added the extra-point kick for an early 7–0 Cassville lead. The scoring drive was set up by a nice kick return and a 27-yard run by Caleb Dashe.

Senior running back James Haas found the end zone in the second quarter from seven yards out, to make it 13–0.

Potosi finally broke the goal line, as senior fullback Nate Friederick scored on a 31-yard screen pass from senior quarterback Tyler Udelhoven.

Friederick picked up good blocks on the play from offensive linemen Dylan Pluemer, Tanner Collins and Andrew Udelhofen and wide receiver Alex Udelhofen on the play.

Neither team really threatened to score the rest of the night. Cassville’s Tyler Torstenson-Harris intercepted a Potosi Hail Mary pass at the 10-yard line on the game’s final play.

The Comets finished Friday night’s contest with 226 yards rushing on 59 attempts, and failed to complete any of their four passing attempts.

Dahse led the Comets with 133 yards on 25 carries, while Jensen ran for 36 yards on 10 attempts.

The Chieftains finished the game with 107 yards rushing on 33 attempts, and were led by Nathan Friederick, who rushed for 60 yards and one score on 12 carries. Teagan Friederick ran for 38 yards on 13 carries, and Tyler Udelhoven had 15 yards on seven attempts.

Udelhoven completed 5-of-17 passing attempts for 60 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Nathan Friederick had three receptions for 42 yards, and Alex Udelhofen two catches for 18.

Collins led the Potosi defense with 13 tackles, while Teagan Friederick had 11, and Jake Udelhoven and Zach Reuter each had 10.

Dahse led Cassville’s defense with 12 tackles, while Caleb Adams had 11 and Todd Haverland seven.

The game featured nine fumbles, including three dropped snaps on punt attempts.

While the Comets play a non-conference contest at Hillsboro (1–1) this week, the Chieftains (0–2) travel to Highland (1–1) Friday night.
