Freshmen fuel Black Hawk over Blackhawks

BLACK HAWK freshmen Natalie Leuzinger (#11) scored 21 of her game-high 28 points in the first half to carry the Warriors out to a 35-12 halftime lead, and they rolled on to a 61-33 win over Stockton in their season opener.

    SOUTH WAYNE — Black Hawk’s freshmen trio of Natalie Leuzinger, Hannah Butler and Maddy Huschitt combined for 43 points in their varsity debut to lead the host Lady Warriors to a 61-33 non-conference victory over Stockton in a prep girls’ basketball game at BHHS on Monday, Nov. 28.
    Leuzinger poured in 21 of her game-high 28 points in the opening half to lead the Warriors (1-0 overall) out to a 35-12 halftime lead. Butler added seven of her nine points in the first half, while Huschitt sank a pair of 3-pointers to account for her six second-half points.
    Black Hawk opened the game with seven straight points to take the lead for good, and then put the game away with a 16-0 scoring run to end the opening half. The Warriors scored 11 of those 16 points off Stockton turnovers as they used tenacious full-court pressure to push the pace and force the Blackhawks into many turnovers.
    The Warriors came out and netted the first seven points of the second half to build up a 30-point advantage, and they cruised from there to open the season with a comfortable win.
    Leuzinger added seven steals along with her 26 points. Junior Brianna Hagen chipped in with seven points, while junior point guard Hannah Herbst tallied seven rebounds, five assists and five steals and senior forward Sammy Lovelace contributed five  points, five rebounds and five assists.
    The Warriors host Belmont in a non-conference game on Thursday, Dec. 1.
