Lady Chieftains finding some momentum
Potosi girls have now won three in a row after 16 start

     Freshman Abby Kaiser scored a game-high 21 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds and five assists as the Chieftains defeated La Farge 60–45 in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon.

     Junior point guard Maddie Hawes added 20 points, a team-high seven assists and three steals to help Potosi (4–6) win its third straight game after six consecutive losses.

     “This was an overall team win for us,” said first-year Potosi head coach Mallory Mau. “Everyone contributed and we all played really well together.  Our keys to the game were playing solid man-to-man defense and playing together.”

     La Farge (4–7) held a slim 16–15 lead after one quarter of play, but Potosi held the Wildcats to just eight points in the second quarter while building a 37–24 halftime advantage.

     Junior Calie Gibson had 10 points six rebounds and a steal in the win, while Brooke McKillip (four points), Taylor Bloyer (three points) and varsity newcomer freshman Sophie Langkamp (two points) also scored for the Chieftains.

     Last Tuesday, Potosi rallied from a 13–2 deficit to defeat Pecatonica 53–41 in a non-conference game in Blanchardville.

     Hawes scored 17 points on 6 of 20 shooting to go along with a team-high seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Hawes also made 5 of 6 from the free throw line to seal the win. Hawes is averaging 15.7 points and 7.7 assists during Potosi’s three-game winning streak.

     Kaiser added 15 points on an efficient 6 of 11 from the field, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and had two assists. Kaiser is averaging 13.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in the three-game winning streak.

     Gibson also scored 14 points and had six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

     Potosi trailed 23–13 at the half, but outscored the winless Vikings (0–10) 30–18 in the second half, including 20–7 in the fourth quarter.

     Last Thursday’s Six Rivers West game at Highland was postponed due to cold weather and last week’s school cancellation and was rescheduled for Tuesday night.

     The Chieftains will return to action Saturday night against Cassville at 6:15 at UW–Platteville’s as part of the Six Rivers Jamboree. Potosi will host Montciello on Monday at 6 p.m. before hosting league co-leading Belmont (11–1, 3–0) on Thursday, Jan. 22.
