ORFORDVILLE – Thursday’s dual meet all came down to 120-pounder Jared Pickett, and the Black Hawk junior didn’t disappoint.
Pickett pinned Parkview’s Collin Hatvelig in the first period of the final match of the night to snap a 34 all tie as the Warriors rallied for a 40-34 come-from-behind victory over the host Vikings in a non-conference prep wrestling match at PHS on Jan. 10.
The teams were all deadlocked through 12 contested matches as each registered two pins, a major decision and three forfeit wins to account for their 34 points.
The Vikings built up an early 34-10 advantage on the Warriors through eight matches, but a 14-6 major decision by sophomore Beau Holland over Parkview’s Aaron Hatlevig at 138-pounds and a 1:20 fall by junior Dakota Meier over the Vikings’ Trystyn Mould at 145 kept the Warriors within striking distance.
Dean Schlittler and Mike Powers received forfeits at 195 and 285, respectively, around a double forfeit at 220 to whittle the hosts’ lead to 34-22, and then Caleb Novak notched a fall over Sam Gordon in 4:27 at 106 and Colin Novak followed with a forfeit win at 113 to bring the Warriors all the way back to even heading into the final match.
With it all coming down to the 120-pound match, Pickett sent the Warriors home sporting big smiles on their faces when he notched the match-winning pin at the 1:11 mark of the opening period.
