SHULLSBURG SENIOR Kindle Cook (#2) battles teammate Calli Jerry (#18) for a dig in Thursdays match against Cassville. Jerry finished with a team-high 23 digs as the Miners defeated the Comets, 3-1, in their finale.

SHULLSBURG — After posting back-to-back victories in their final two Six Rivers West matches of the regular season, the Shullsburg Miners volleyball team will head into the post-season with some momentum.
The Lady Miners (6-13 overall, 3-9 SRW) posted a 3-1 decision at Highland on Tuesday, Oct. 10, and then rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to win three straight sets to down Cassville by a 3-1 margin at home on Thursday, Oct. 12.
At Highland, Shullsburg senior Faith Ubersox pounded down 17 kills and 28 digs to lead the Miners over the Cardinals (4-8), 25-17, 25-23, 25-27, 25-13, in SRW action.
“It was great to get a win over Highland, a big win for us on the road. We played a pretty close match with them at home, but Faith was out with a knee injury. She had a big game for us this time,” stated Shullsburg head coach Hannah Pick. “ Our girls were ready for this match. They played with confidence and a never quit attitude. It was great to see everything come together for us as a team.”
Freshman Kayla Klotz added 12 kills and a team-high four blocks, while sophomore setter Reva Spillane tallied 22 assists and three blocks in the match for the Miners.
Sophomore Calli Jerry had 28 digs and two aces, and freshman Layla Alt provided 13 digs and 11 assists in the victory, which snapped a four-game SRW slide.
At home against the Comets (2-10) for Senior Night and their Stand With Texas fundraiser, the Miners fought their way out of the basement in the league standings with a come-from-behind victory.
“The match against Cassville was a fun one to play in front of our home crowd. When we played up there, we played five sets so we were ready for another tough match. Our girls came out strong and were on from the start,” Pick said.
The Comets grabbed an early lead by closing the opening set on a 12-3 scoring run to secure a 25-16 win.
Shullsburg evened the match with a 25-14 decision in set two, and then went ahead with a 25-17 win in set three. The Miners sealed a 3-1 victory by outlasting the Comets, 25-23, in set four.
“What a great way for our seniors to go out on their last home game of their career. Our team has shown tremendous improvement since the start of the season. We are excited to see what comes next,” added Pick.
Spillane distributed 17 assists to guide the Miners’ offense on the night. Ubersox and Alt each had eight kills with Ubersox adding two aces. Jerry led the team with 23 digs and Klotz registered five blocks in the win.
The WIAA Division 4 volleyball tournament began on Tuesday, Oct. 17. The #15-seeded Miners faced the #2-seeded River Ridge Timberwolves in a regional quarterfinal match. The results of that match were unavailable at press time.
Tuesday’s winners will advance to Thursday’s regional semifinal round with the regional final match scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
