SHULLSBURG – The Shullsburg/Benton softball team picked up a pair of Six Rivers Conference victories on the diamond, pounding Pecatonica, 19-2, in five innings at Blanchardville’s McKellar Park on Thursday, April 14, and edging River Ridge/Cassville, 6-4, in a West clash at Badger Park on Monday, April 18.
The wins were the first for first-year head coach Jennifer Bartels and improved the Miner-Zephyrs to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in SRC play.
Shulls/Ben got off to a fast start in both games, plating six runs in the top of the second inning to take control against the Vikings, and scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead on the Comets.
McKailah Strang went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and four runs scored to lead the Miner-Zephyrs on Thursday afternoon. Kelsie Goffinet went 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored, while Leanne Soppe finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Pitcher Hattie Rennert went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and she earned the complete-game win in the circle after allowing two runs– both earned– on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Jada Hicks and Kayla Dougherty each knocked in two RBI and scored once against the Vikings, while Lily Carver and Jordan Busch scored twice each.
The Miner-Zephyrs followed their six-run second inning outburst with two runs in the third, eight in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
Carver, Rennert and Lexi Fladseth each doubled in the game, and Morgan Emery smashed a solo home run for the Miner-Zephyrs in the fifth inning.
Against the Comets on Monday, Shulls/Ben did all their damage in the first two innings, scoring five times in the first and once in the second to open up a 6-2 lead and they held on for their second straight victory.
Lexi Fladseth singled in a pair of runs and later scored on a two-run error to lead the hosts’ five-run outburst.
After the Comets answered with two runs in the top of the second, Lily Carver tripled in McKailah Strang in the bottom of the second to swing the momentum back in the Miner-Zephyrs’ favor.
Hattie Rennert made that lead stick by allowing just two more runs over RR/C’s final five at-bats to secure the win. She allowed three earned runs on five hits and four walks over seven innings, while striking out five batters.
Carver finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and a RBI.
Shullsburg/Benton has league games scheduled at home against Argyle on Thursday, April 21, and at Highland on Monday, April 25; and they have a non-conference make-up game at Southwestern scheduled for Tuesday, April 26. All three games are set to begin at 5 p.m.
