Zephyrs suffer tough loss to the Braves

BENTON - After opening their season two weeks ago with a 30-8 victory over River Ridge, the Benton-Scales Mound varsity football team dropped to 1-1 last Friday night with a 20-6 loss to visiting Belmont.

Coach Al Alexander’s squad had a hard time getting in the end zone, as junior fullback Franki Carlborg scored the team’s only touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter.

Belmont’s defense continually stopped the Zephyrs’ attack, and did a nice job at the point of attack.

“I’ve got to give Belmont a lot of credit,” said coach Alexander. “They were ready for us, and defensively they just beat us up front.”

The Zephyrs also had a hard time holding onto the ball, as they lost 3-of-6 fumbles, and threw one interception.

When Benton-Scales Mound was able to move the ball, it seemed a turnover was quick to change the momentum.

“The hard thing for us was the turnovers,” said Alexander. “They were tough to overcome.”

The Zephyrs concluded the night with 55 yards rushing on 20 attempts, while sophomore quarterback Stephen Korte completed 3-of-11 passes.

Korte did leave the game in the second half with a wrist injury, and was replaced at quarterback by senior Brandon Lyne.

Senior wide out Mitchell Brant had a nice game, coming away with five receptions for 107 yards to lead all receivers.

Belmont was led by Brandon Wedig, who ran for 153 yards and three TDs.

Now 1-1 on the season, Benton-Scales Mound plays at Highland (2-0) this Friday night, as the Cardinals are coming off a 46-8 victory over Shullsburg.
