     DARLINGTON – Senior Shelby Poss fired a seven-over 42 to earn medalist honors by six strokes over teammate Naomi Black as Darlington/Cuba City girls’ golf team shot down league rivals Southwestern and Lancaster in their home opener at the Darlington Country Club on Monday, Aug. 29.

The Redbirds won the SWAL-SWC triangular with a score of 202, which was 63 strokes better than runner-up Southwestern at 265. Lancaster had just three golfers competing and finished with an incomplete team score.

Poss carded pars on holes #1, #3, #6, #8 and #9 on her way to a medalist round of 42 for the ‘Birds. Black, a junior, came in second overall among the varsity with a 48, while junior Kayla Paquette shot a 50 for the hosts. Tina Kurschner and Sami Poss each came in at 62 for D/CC.

Ashley Adams (50) and Ella Marcue (51) led the Flying Arrows, and Nicole Brotzman paced the Wildcats with a 56.

In the junior varsity match, Darlington/Cuba City junior Nikki Zimmerman tallied a 47 to lead all JV golfers. None of the teams were able to field a full JV squad at Monday’s meet.

At Prairie du Chien, on Friday, Aug. 26, surprise entry Onalaska ran away with the team title by 70 strokes over runner-up Darlington/Cuba City at the 2011 Prairie du Chien Invitational.

According to Redbirds’ head coach Gary Ringen, the Hilltoppers were not scheduled to compete in Friday’s match, but they showed up anyway and took home the top hardware with an impressive round of 358.

The Redbirds finished second at 428, while Wisconsin Dells pulled in third with a score of 458.

Naomi Black placed fourth overall with a round of 98 to lead the ‘Birds. Shelby Poss was second on the team at 110, followed by Kayla Paquette with a 114 and Kaitlyn Wall with a 116.

Darlington/Cuba City heads to Lancaster for a SWAL-SWC match on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m.
