Cuba City swept IowaGrant and Fennimore to improved to 60 in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.

CUBA CITY — Cuba City continued to sweep their way through the SWAL competition over the past week as they posted 3-0 victories over Iowa Grant last Tuesday and Fennimore on Monday.

The Cubans (18-5 overall) have won five consecutive SWAL matches via the sweep to remain alone atop the league standings at 6-0 heading into Tuesday’s showdown with second-place Darlington (the results of that match were not available at press time).

The Cubans kicked off their Homecoming Week celebration by taking down the visiting Iowa-Grant Panthers, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-23 in straight sets at CCHS on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

“Even though we swept the match, it seemed much closer. They tend to serve tough and play scrappy defense. Finding gaps in their defense is always a puzzle. We did a nice job balancing out our offense at the net. I-G had trouble closing their block at times, so we kept attacking,” said Cuba City head coach Keri Lawson.

The team had a good night at the service line as well, flooring nine aces en route to the sweep.

“Set three became interesting as I-G kept finding ways to stay close and eventually tie up the set. We have been focusing on closing out sets and matches when it’s close. This situation was good for us. I expect I-G to improve by the time we see them again in a few weeks,” explained Lawson.

Setter Courtney Busch drove the offense with her 24 assists and she also served up a team-high five aces in the win. Brinley Wood tallied eight kills and three blocks, while Megan Hartl chipped in with six kills, three aces and 25 digs.

Keisha Cummings added three blocks and Mykenzie Vaassen had 11 digs for the Cubans.

At Fennimore, on Monday, Sept. 25, the Lady Cubans kicked off a busy week on the court with a 25-12, 25-12 and 25-19 sweep over the host Golden Eagles.

Busch again led the team in assists with 28 and at the service stripe with six aces. Wood slammed eight kills and Elizabeth Misky registered eight digs for the Cubans.

Cuba City has upcoming SWAL matches at Boscobel on Thursday, Sept. 28, and at home against Mineral Point on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
