Fennimore claims fourth straight Clash conference title
Fennimore
Fennimore won a fourth straight SWC/SWAL Clash conference tournament title Saturday at Mineral Point.

MINERAL POINT — Fennimore is the king of the conference once again.

The second-ranked Golden Eagles sent four wrestlers to the finals, placed eight in the top four and racked up 249 team points to win a fourth consecutive SWC/SWAL Clash conference tournament title.

Senior Riley Blair won his first Clash title, after a pair of second place finishes as a freshman and sophomore, and missing all of last year with a concussion.

Blair (19–2), a two-time state qualifier, pinned Iowa–Grant/Highland’s Matthew Winders in the quarterfinals and Darlington/Black Hawk’s Cayden Milz in the semis, then defeated Mineral Point’s Logan Schmitz 12–6 to win the 145-pound conference title.

Freshman Brody Lee, senior Trevor Wanek and sophomore Maguire Fitzgerald all finished second for the Eagles. Sophomores Mason Lull and Aidan Nutter both placed third, while sophomore Will Ahnen and junior Brayden Leffler took fourth.

Lee (29–11) went 3–1 Saturday to finish second to Lancaster’s Remington Bontreger (33–4) at 106. Wanek (34–6) finished second to Prairie du Chien’s Traeton Saint (39–3) at 138, while Fitzgerald (19–9) finished second to Iowa–Grant/Highland’s Clayton Kite (9–1) at 152.

Lull (8–2) rebounded from a semifinal loss to place third at 120.

Nutter (28–8) suffered a loss to four-time Clash champion Zach Licht of River Valley, but bounced back to place third at 126.

Ahnen (28–14) finished fourth at 160, while Leffler (27–11) took fourth at 195.

Sophomore Luke Blair (25–13, fifth at 113), senior Trevor Neuroth (22–8, fifth at 182) and senior Tyler Klaas (18–17, sixth at 170)  also placed in the top six for Fennimore.

NEXT UP: The conference champion Eagles will travel to Lancaster on Saturday for the WIAA Division 3 Lancaster regional, perhaps the toughest D3 regional in the state. Opening round matches begin at 10:30 a.m.

Clash runner-up Lancaster, SWAL duals runner-up Iowa–Grant/Highland, traditionally strong Mineral Point, Boscobel and River Ridge/Cassville are the other teams in the seven-team regional with second-ranked Fennimore.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class will advance to next week’s D3 Mineral Point Sectional.
