LANCASTER — Monday’s non-conference 33–22 non-conference loss at Lancaster was a classic tale of two halves for the Iowa–Grant girls’ basketball team.
Sophomore Haley Yelinek buried back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter to give the Panthers a 16–10 lead with 4:40 left in the half.
But the I–G offense went into a deep freeze shortly there after. The Panthers managed just six points in the final 21 minutes.
Lancaster senior Jena Vesperman scored back-to-back layups late in the first half and sophomore Kindra Yoose made a free throw to pull the Arrows within a point at halftime, 16–15.
Vesperman made 3 of 4 free throws and buried a short jumper early in the second half as Lancaster took its first lead at 20–18 at the four-minute mark of the third quarter.
A steal and breakaway layup by I–G freshman point guard Emma Liddicoat just beat the third-quarter buzzer to pull the Panthers within two at 24–20, but Iowa–Grant was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Lancaster made 7 of 9 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
Vesperman finished with a game-high 13 points to lead the Arrows.
Yelinek scored eight to lead Iowa–Grant. Liddicoat added six points.
Last Thursday the Panthers were blown out by perennial SWAL power Cuba City 87–27.
Molly Wedige scored a game-high 25 points and Kayla Marti added 22 as the Cubans (8–1, 4–0) cruised to victory.
Sophomore Hailey Roth scored six points to lead the Panthers.
Iowa–Grant traveled to Mineral Point on Tuesday and will next travel to Southwestern (0–9, 0–4) on Friday night. The Panthers will then host River Valley on Monday.
