DARLINGTON – The Darlington/Cuba City co-op girls’ golf team had a spectacular day on the home course, setting a new course record at the Darlington Country Club with a round of 181 in defeating Lena/Winslow, 181-226, in a non-conference dual meet on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
Playing Illinois rules where you play six varsity golfers and count the best four scores, the Redbirds etched their name into program history by firing a record-setting round of 181 to break the old mark by seven strokes.
Senior Shelby Poss and junior Nikki Zimmerman shot rounds of 44 for the ‘Birds to share medalist honors on the day, while sophomore Sami Poss finished one stroke back at 45 and junior Naomi Black added a 48 to finish off the team scoring on the day.
Lena/Winslow’s Alexis Graf led the guests with a 46.
It was a good round all around for the Redbirds as their remaining two varsity golfers– Kayla Paquette (52) and Kaitlyn Wall (57)– and two junior varsity golfers– Tina Kurschner (58) and MariKate Knellwolf (58)– all shot in the 50s for the hosts.
At Cuba City, on Monday, Sept. 19, Naomi Black was the lone golfer to break 50 on the day and the Lady Redbirds remained unbeaten in dual meet competition by defeating conference foes Southwestern and Lancaster in the Wildcat Triangular held at Cole Acres.
Black earned medalist honors with a 48, while teammates Shelby Poss, Kayla Paquette and Nikki Zimmerman each carded a 52 to lead the ‘Birds to the team title with a score of 204.
Southwestern’s Stephanie Appleby was second on the day with a 50 to guide the host Wildcats to a second-place finish with a 234, and the Flying Arrows pulled in third with a 258.
The Redbirds wrap up the regular season with road matches against Lena/Winslow on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m., and against Mount Horeb on Monday, Sept. 26, starting at 3 p.m.
