Iowa-Grants Max Maylor cautiously works around the center of the mat against La Crosse Centrals Jared Van Maanen in a 132 semifinal match at Bi-State. Van Maanen earned a 9-2 win to advance to the finals. Maylor went on to finish sixth.

LA CROSSE — Eight Panthers won at least one match at last week’s two-day Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Civic Center.

Iowa–Grant junior Sawyer Sarbacker went 8–1 at the 57-team event to place third out of 40 wrestlers at 113 pounds to lead the Iowa–Grant/Highland co-op.

Highland sophomore Max Maylor went 4–3, winning his first four matches, to finish sixth at 132 pounds.
The Panthers scored 99 team points and placed seventh out of 18 teams in Division 3.

Stratford crowned three champions and had one runner-up, one third-place finish and a fifth to run away with the Division 3 team title with 321.5 points. New Lisbon finished a distant seconds with 122 points.

Sarbacker, who was seeded second at 113, cruised through the first two rounds with back-to-back pins before suffering a 7–5 overtime loss to Baraboo’s Pablo Ramirez. But the 2015 state qualifier battle his way through the consolation bracket with a pair of pins and a 3–1 win over Mount Horeb’s Dalton Frakes and a 2–1 victory over Ellsworth’s Matzek to earn a rematch with Ramirez (16–7).

This time Sarbacker edged the Baraboo wrestler, 6–5, in the consolation semifinals and then closed out his tournament with an 8–0 major decision over Luxemburg–Casco’s Nathan Rosman in the third-place match.

Maylor, also a 2015 state qualifier, used a bye, a 9–1 major decision, a 5–2 win and a narrow 4–3 victory over Stratford’s Derek Marten to reach the semifinals.

Maylor then suffered a 9–2 loss to top-seeded and eventual champion Jaden Van Maanen of La Crosse Central (21–1).
Maylor, who was seeded fourth at 132, then suffered back-to-back losses to second-seeded Hunter Dischler (22–1) of Ithaca/Weston in the consolation semifinals and Middleton’s Chris Rogers (18–5) in the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Noah Pennekamp (10–8) went 4–2 with a pair of pins, a 5–4 tie-breaker victory and a bye, but did not place at 120 pounds.

Sophomore Clayton Kite (12–8) recorded a pair of pins and received a forfeit to go 3–2 at 128 pounds. Sophomore Brady Peat (16–4) went 3–2 at 160 pounds with a pin, a forfeit win and a bye, but did not place.

Freshman Drew Hennessey (13–6) won his first two matches at 170, but did not place. Senior Brent Rider (9–11) received a consolation bye and earned a 3–0 win, but did not place at 220.

Ron Allen (106 pounds), Trae Kuenster (145), Travis Arndt (152) and Clint Havlik (182) each lost both their matches on the mat during the tournament.

Coach Ryan Allen’s Panthers traveled to Riverdale Tuesday night for a SWAL dual and will next host Fennimore Friday night at 7 p.m.
