FORT ATKINSON – Darlington junior Kennedy Wagner kept her fine season going by earning one of the four individual sectional berths to highlight the Redbirds’ day at the 2017 WIAA Division 2 Regional Girls’ Golf Meet hosted by Jefferson High School at the Koshonong Mounds Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 28.
“Kennedy advancing to sectionals is unbelievably exciting for her, especially with such a tough regional. She should be very proud of her performance. She continues to be a great role model for the golf team,” said Darlington head coach Molly Rice.
Wagner carded a round of 104 to finish in a tied for 14th-place overall and earn the second individual sectional berth at the meet. Lancaster junior Lindsay Wolf tied for sixth overall with a 96 to earn the first sectional berth, while Clinton freshman Taylor Peterson (104) and Cambridge sophomore Aubrie Pero (109) garnered the other two individual berths.
Madison Edgewood/Sacred Heart earned the regional team title with a score of 369, finishing eight strokes ahead of runner-up Jefferson at 377. Edgerton with a 413 and Southwestern/Cuba City with a 437 earned the other two team sectional qualifications on Thursday.
Jefferson senior Alexa Owen and ME/SH sophomore Grace Welch shared the regional medalist honors with 11-over rounds of 83. SW/CC senior and SWAL champion Bailee Bussan was one stroke back with an 84.
The Lady Redbirds placed sixth among the nine-team field with a score of 467. Sophomore Marissa Gould tied for 19th-place with a 112, followed by sophomore Maggie Nordquist in 29th at 121 and junior Chloe Muhlstein in 35th with a 130 to complete the team scoring on the day. Junior Holly Ray was fifth on the team and 41st overall at 136.
“I was happy with our performance at regionals because we kept our cool the entire meet and competed the entire time. Our sixth-place finish gave us a taste of what we can do next season with this team,” Rice replied. “The fact that we will be returning everyone next year is a coach’s dream. There is so much potential. The team knows that if they continue working hard in the off season, next year should be a memorable one.”
The WIAA Division 2 Sectional Meet teed off at Madison’s Yahara Golf Club on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The results of the meet were not available at press time.
