DARLINGTON – The Darlington/Black Hawk wrestling team opened their dual meet season by pinning down a 43-30 non-conference decision over visiting Dodgeville at Darlington High School on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
Four wrestlers registered falls among the team’s eight victories to help the WarBirds (1-0 overall) lock down the dual meet win. Junior Paul King opened the night by pinning Hank Dougherty in 1:27 of the 126-pound match. Sophomore Hunter Bredeson followed with a 4:50 pin of Riley Crook at 132, while sophomore Kolbe Ubersox recorded a 14-3 major decision over Isaac Grunow at 138 and junior Grady Rielly posted a 4-2 decision over Tyler Bell at 145 to extend the Warbirds’ lead to 19-0.
Dodgeville cut the deficit to 19-15 with a decision and two falls, but the WarBirds used forfeit wins by juniors Tyler Mosley at 182 and Brody Milz at 195 and pin win in 1:50 by junior Connor McGowan over Jonathon Giesking at 220 to extend the hosts’ advantage to 37-15 with four weight classes remaining in the match.
Senior Jake Tuescher dropped a tough 7-0 decision to Dodger heavyweight Shelby Jones at 285 to make the score 37-18 in the WarBirds favor, however that outcome sealed the win for the hosts as there were not enough points left for the Dodgers to rally.
Pins at 106 and 112 got Dodgeville within 37-30, but freshman Cayden Milz capped the WarBirds’ victory with a pin over Razzi Momon in 53 seconds in the final match at 120.
Darlington/Black Hawk had the rest of their competitions for the week postponed or cancelled due to the weather. Friday’s SWAL dual at Fennimore was postponed to a later date (no make-up was announced by press time), while the Badger State Invitational on Saturday was cancelled.
Darlington/Black Hawk has a non-conference dual meet at Lancaster on Friday, Dec. 23, beginning at 7 p.m.
