CUBA CITY – After battling lightning, rain and technical problems throughout the meet, Monday’s stormy weather eventually became issue enough to postpone the Cuba City WIAA Division 3 Regional Track and Field Meet.
    The girls’ teams completed 17 of the 18 events and the boys’ teams finished 16 events, leaving just three events remaining when they returned to Cuba City High School on Tuesday afternoon. (The outcome of those remaining races was not available at press time.)
    The boys’ 3,200-meter run will be the first event to be run, followed by the girls’ and boys’ 1,600-meter relay races.
    Darlington has all but locked up the girls’ regional championship after capturing six regional titles and rolling up 148 team points through 17 events. The Lady Redbirds qualified 13 individuals for sectional competition in nine events and also moved on three relay teams with one relay left to run.
    Cuba City sits in second-place with 130 points with two-time defending regional champion Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg in third-place with 128 points. The Zephyrs have already won five regional titles and advanced 12 individuals to sectionals in 10 events along with two relay teams.
    Belmont and Black Hawk each qualified one individual for sectionals.
    Senior Paige Schilling won the 3,200 (13:52.94) and junior Reghan Komprood won the 1,600 (5:48.14), and the Darlington duo joined with junior Emma Crist and sophomore Ilse Mendez to win the 3,200 relay (10:45.21) for the Lady Redbirds.
    Junior Hunter Weber won the pole vault (9’9”) with a school record-tying effort, and junior Kennedy Rankin won the discus (123’10”) for the Lady Redbirds.
    Junior Emma Lawrence advanced in four events after winning the 100-meter high hurdles (17.34), 300 low hurdles (47.44), the triple jump (33’7”) and the 400 relay (51.64) along with senior Paige Murphy, and freshmen Calli Jerry and Chloe Matthews.
    BSMS leads the way in the boys’ meet with 146 points with two events to go. Darlington is still within striking distance to capturing their 11th straight regional crown sitting in second with 133 points, while Cuba City is third with 116 points.
    The Zephyrs have crowned three regional champions and advanced 13 individuals in 10 events along with three relay teams. The Redbirds have won six regional titles and also advanced 13 individuals in 10 events along with three relay teams.
    Belmont sits fourth with 42 points after winning two events and advancing three individuals and a relay team to sectionals.
    BSMS senior Jeremiah Bailey won the high jump (5’10”) and triple jump (40’3”), and freshman Caleb O’Neill won the 400 (55.14) for the Zephyrs.
    Junior Grady Reilly won the 110 hurdles (15.64) and 300 hurdles (43.54) for the Redbirds, while junior Tanner Evenstad won the 800 (2:06.54) and joined senior Conner Hackett, junior Paul King and sophomore Tucker Lange to win the 3,200 relay (8:30.70).
    Sophomore Trae Schilling won the 1,600 (5:02.54), and the 800 relay team of seniors Jared Meister and Trevor Johnson and juniors Kameron Blosch and Curtis Blosch added a regional title (1:34.84) for the ‘Birds.
    Belmont junior Jacob Wedig swept the throwing events by winning the shot put (46’0.75”) and the discus (152’7”) for the Braves.
    Listed below are all the sectional qualifiers from Monday’s Meet.
    The 2017 WIAA Division 3 sectional track and field meet will be hosted by Bangor High School on Thursday, May 25, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
    The top four place winners in each event and any individual or relay team whose performance in sectionals ranks among the top four sectional finishers in all the D3 sectional meets will advance to the 2017 WIAA State Track and Field Meet to be held at UW-La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday, June 2-3.
