BOSCOBEL – The host Boscobel Bullsdogs managed to scratch out a single run against Cuba City pitcher Emily Wiederholt, but they couldn’t get a hit as the Cubans’ ace tossed her second no-hitter in less than a week in a 3-1 SWAL victory at BHS on Thursday, April 21.
Wiederholt allowed just three base runners all game– two on walks and one on a hit-by-pitch– and struck out 16 batters en route to another dominating effort in the circle.
The Lady Cubans (9-4 overall, 6-2 SWAL) scored all the runs they needed in the top of the first inning when they plated a pair of runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Wiederholt helped her own cause by driving in Jessi Marti for the game’s first run.
Kayla Busch added a home run in the game for the Cubans. Marti went 2-for-4 with a pair of single and Devon Kaiser had a double.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth when the batter who was hit by a pitch came in to score on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. The Cubans answered back with a run in the fifth frame, and Wiederholt buckled down to toss three scoreless innings to finish off the Bulldogs.
Wiederholt (8-3) also shut down SWAL foe Riverdale in a pair of tough contests over the past week, while the Cubans dropped a high-scoring non-conference affair with Platteville at home on Friday.
Wiederholt fired a two-hit shutout against the Chieftains at home on Tuesday, April 19, as the Cubans rolled to a 6-0 victory, and she allowed just a single run on six hits in a 4-1 win over Riverdale in Muscoda on Monday, April 25.
Morgan Vosberg went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and two RBI to lead the Cubans in Tuesday’s game, while Devon Kaiser blasted a two-run home run in Tuesday’s meeting with the Chieftains and went 2-for-2 with a triple in Monday’s game.
The Cubans tallied single runs in the second and fifth innings and two runs each in the third and fourth frames to defeat the Chieftains on Tuesday, and the Black-and-Gold tallied single runs in the second and third innings to erase an early 1-0 deficit and then added two key insurance runs in the sixth to secure the season sweep of the Chieftains
At home, on Friday, April 22, the visiting Lady Hillmen ended the Cubans’ five-game winning streak by pounding out 13 hits en route to an 11-7 non-conference triumph.
Platteville had a five-run rally in the top of the third inning to pull on top of the Cubans to stay, and then added single runs in the fourth and fifth frames before opening up an 11-2 cushion with a four-run sixth.
CC went down swing, scoring three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but their rally came up a little short.
Wiederholt, who handed over the pitching duties to Busch for this game, went 3-for-4 at the plate to guide the Cubans’ nine-hit attack. Madison Buxton and Marti added two hits apiece.
The Hillmen pounded out six extra-base hits on the day led by Sierra Brecke, who went 3-for-4 with a home run and a pair of doubles.
Cuba City has SWAL games at home against Darlington on Thursday, April 28, and at Fennimore on Monday, May. Both games are set to start at 5 p.m. The Cubans’ non-conference game against Galena scheduled for Friday, April 29, was cancelled.
