Wrestlers heat up the mats at the SWC-SWAL Clash
Bel-Plat wrest Wiegel color
BELMONT/PLATTEVILLE sophomore Isaac Wiegel (top) didnt need to see very well to score back points on Fennimores Kohl Wardell during their 106-pound quarterfinal match at the SWC-SWAL Clash held at Mineral Point High School on Saturday, Feb. 6. Wiegel pinned Wardell in 3:20 and went on to take second in the class.

MINERAL POINT – Darlington/Black Hawk seniors Conrad Blosch and Taylor Evenstad finished second in the 182-pound and 220-pound weight classes, respectively, to lead the WarBirds, and Belmont/Platteville sophomore Isaac Wiegel wrestled away with a runner-up finish in the 106-pound class for the Braves at the 29th annual SWC-SWAL Clash held at Mineral Point High School on Saturday, Feb. 6.
The WarBirds placed 10 of their 12 wrestlers in the top six of their weight class to finish in fifth-place overall with 194 points. The Braves placed two wrestlers in the top three to place 12th out of 13 teams with 50 points.
Fennimore claimed the Clash team title for the second year in a row with 282 points. River Valley edged Mineral Point, 250 to 249, for second-place at the event.
“My goal going into the tournament for the team was to score more team points this year than we did last year. Last year we scored 175 and placed fifth and this year we scored 194 and still placed fifth, but I was satisfied with earning more team points,” said Darlington/Black Hawk co-head coach Tom Donar.
Blosch (28-6) finished second at 182 for the second year in a row after falling to Fennimore’s Louis Heberlein by a score of 5-4 in the championship match.
Blosch had tied the score at 4-4 by scoring a takedown with 35 seconds left in the third period, but Heberlein managed to escape with 25 seconds to go and he held on for the one-point win.
Blosch made the finals with a bye, a pin and a 5-2 decision over Boscobel’s Preston Baker in the semifinals.
Evenstad (19-3) didn’t have to spend as much time on the mat to place second at 220 for the WarBirds. Byes in round one and round two put the senior right into the semifinal round, and he made the finals for the first time with a 2:58 pin of Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Brent Rider.
However, in the finals, Evenstad was pinned by Dodgeville senior and UW-Madison recruit Brady Wetter in 1:27 to take second.
Wiegel (33-7) worked his way into the finals at 106 with a bye, a pin and a thrilling 2-1 decision over Mineral Point’s Danny Pittz in the semifinal round.
In the finals, the Belmont sophomore met up with the top-ranked Division 2 106-pounder in River Valley’s Zach Licht and the Blackhawk standout defended his title for a second straight year by outscoring Wiegel 13-11 in an exciting final.
“I was happy with Issac’s second place finish, especially after having to beat Pittz in the semifinal match,” said Belmont/Platteville head coach Andrew Campbell. “The big points in the championship match that hurt us were giving up a takedown in the first 15 seconds of the match, and then getting rolled twice for four points each time. You cannot give up that many points and beat a kid as good as Licht.”
Darlington/Black Hawk’s Kolbe Ubersox (26-8) at 120 and Lance Ubersox (23-10) at 152 each placed third along with Belmont/Platteville’s Lucas Fugate (14-2) after posted 3-1 records on the day.
    K. Ubersox, a freshman, and Fugate, a junior, each registered a pair of pins in their matches, while L. Ubersox, a sophomore, avenged a pair of earlier losses this season by defeating Dodgeville’s Joey Recob and Mineral Point’s Lucas Sanchez by identical 7-6 decisions.
“I thought Lance wrestled really well at conference. He beat two wrestlers who beat him handily earlier in the season. If he continues to wrestle that well he will make some noise at regionals and, hopefully, sectionals,” mentioned Donar.
Fugate was up 10-4 on Mineral Point’s Riley Workman in their semifinal match at 160, but got turned on his back with around 15 seconds remaining and was pinned with just two seconds left on the clock to miss a shot at the finals. He came back with a vengeance by posting a 1:02 pin in the third-place match against Cuba City/Southwestern/Benton’s Tyre Hall.
“As heartbreaking as that (semifinal) loss was, I think Lucas is the type of wrestler who will use that as motivation for the last push of the season. You never want to have a loss like that, but I would rather have it at conference than at regionals, sectionals or state,” noted Campbell.
Freshman Connor Novak (19-14) went 2-2 with a pin to place fourth at 126, while sophomore Grady Rielly went 4-1 with three pins to take fifth at 132 and sophomore Brody Milz (18-13) went 3-1 with two byes and a decision to take fifth at 195 for the WarBirds.
Sixths went to freshman Hunter Bredeson (19-10) at 113, senior Caleb Novak (21-13) at 145 and junior Jacob Tuescher (19-15) at 285. Novak, who posted three pins in his five matches, and Tuescher, who had one pin, each lost a hard-fought overtime decision in their respective fifth-place matches.
“Up until the final round I feel like we won pretty much all the matches we were favored in. In the last round I would have like to win the two overtime matches we lost and, of course, the 182-pound final. Overall, I feel a lot better about where we are than I did last year. I am hoping we can keep the momentum going into regionals,” Donar said.
The WIAA wrestling tournament series begins on Saturday, Feb. 13. Darlington/Black Hawk will compete in the Division 3 regional meet at Parkview High School in Orfordville, starting at 10:30 a.m., while Belmont/Platteville will compete at the Division 2 regional meet at River Valley High School in Spring Green, starting at 11 a.m.
The top team from each of Saturday’s regional meets advance to the team sectional competition on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The D-3 matches will be held at the Royall High School in Elroy, and the D-2 matches will be held back at River Valley High School. The semifinal matches start at 6 p.m., and the finals are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
The top two individuals from each weight class at each regional advance to the individual sectional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 20. The D-3 sectional will be held at Mineral Point High School and D-2 sectional will take place at Richland Center High School. Both sectional meets are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
