Belmonts Wiegel notches win #100

Belmont junior Isaac Wiegel notched his 100th career victory with a 134 victory over Fennimores Thomas Keeney in the semifinals of Saturdays Belmont/Platteville Invitational. Wiegel went on to win the 113-pound title.

BELMONT — Belmont junior Isaac Wiegel recorded his 100th career victory in front of his home crowd Saturday with a 13–4 major decision over Fennimore’s Tyler Keeney in the semifinals at the 10-team Belmont/Platteville Invitational.

Wiegel (28–2), who is currently ranked second in Division 2 at 113 pounds went on to win his weight class with a 9–7 victory over Janesville Parker’s Brett Perkins.

Wiegel now sports a career record of 101– 22. He is a two-time state qualifier and finished fourth Division 2 at 106 pounds a year ago.

“It is very impressive for Isaac to get the 100th win midway through his junior year,” said Belmont/Platteville head coach Andrew Campbell. “It just goes to show how consistently good he has been and how he has been getting better.  In his finals match, Isaac was more dominant that the score would show. Five of Perkins points came from Isaac letting him up, and the last two came from a late take down.”

Wiegel open the day with a bye, then posted back-to-back pins to reach win number 99. Wiegel’s 5–0 day helped the Braves finish fourth out of 10 teams with 155 points, just 2.5 points behind third-place Janesville Parker (157.5) and 8.5 points behind third-place Dodgeville (163.5). Kenosha Life Christian won the team title with 242.5 points.

“Our fourth place finish just goes to show how far we have come not only over the past few years, but this season,” said Campbell. “It was the closest we have been to full strength this season and it showed.  As a team I think it is the best we have looked this season.  At the same time we were in second place as team most of the day and at the end only 8.5 points behind the 2nd place team.  We will take this 4th place finish and feel good about it.  At the same time we will look at how close we were to 2nd and use that to motivate us for the last bit of the season.”

Belmont freshman Tristen Gilbertson, who battled injury and illness early in the season also went 5–0 on Saturday to win the 106-pound title as did Platteville senior Luke Fugate at 182 pounds.

Gilbertson (13–6) used a by and two first-period pins in the round robin prelims then pinned Janesville Parker’s Tristan Buol to reach the 106-pound finals. He then recorded his fourth pin of the day, this one in 1:21 over Sun Prairie’s Richard Quintana to win the title.

“Tristen looked very good Saturday,” said Campbell. “ He had a bit of a rough December, missing the Sun Prairie tournament because he was hurt, and our Boscobel and River Ridge duals because he was sick. Now that he has been healthy for a while, things have been coming along nicely for him and it showed Saturday.”

Fugate (27–3), who is ranked second in the state at 182 pounds, ran through the 182-pound weight class Saturday, cruising to the title with a bye, an injury default victory and three pins. He stuck Evansville/Albany’s Austin Anderson at the 3:23 mark of the second period in the championship match.

Platteville freshman Will Schaefer (13–10) went 3–2 and finished second at 195 pounds. Both of his losses were to Janesville Parker’s Izaiah Jones.

Josh Taber (7–14) placed fourth at 152, while Alex Sonsalla (2–3) finished fifth at 170 in his first action of the season.
Platteville freshman Shannon Gill-Mast (126) and Platteville junior Venkat Reddy (220) each picked up their first varsity victories.

Last Thursday night, the Braves dropped a 54–23 SWC dual meet decision at Dodgeville.

Belmont/Platteville (2–3, 0–3 SWC) will return to action Thursday night against SWC-leading Lancaster (9–0, 2–0 SWC). The Braves will then travel to the Monroe Invitational on Saturday.
