Bryla leads Hillmen boys to SWC cross country title
IMG 2137
Senior Rachel Schwarzmann placed eighth at last Thursdays SWC Cross Country Championships at UWPlattevilles Veterans Memorial Park. Schwarzmann is in her first year on the cross country team.

Platteville’s Cullen Bryla took full advantage of running on his home course at last Thursday’s SWC Cross Country Championships.
The standout senior covered the familiar 5,000-meter layout at UW–Platteville Veterans Memorial Park in 16:30.7 to claim the boys’ individual championship and led the Hillmen to the SWC team title.
Sophomore teammate Vince Momot finished second overall in 16:32.8 to aid Platteville’s winning effort.
Senior Ben Bahr finished sixth in 17:21 and Max Frommelt placed seventh in 17:38.2 to join Cullen and Momot as first-team all-conference runners.
Freshman Dan Iselin (eighth, 17:42.2) and junior Colton Henry (11th, 17:50.9) each finished in the top 14 to earn second-team All-SWC honors.
Sophomore Blake Julius rounded out Platteville’s line-up with a 17th place finish (18:17.5).
With five of the eight finishers and Henry as a strong kicker at 11th, Platteville easily outpointed challenger Dodgeville/Mineral Point 24–57 to claim the boys’ team title.
The victory also wrapped up the season-long conference championship for the Hillmen, who went a perfect 5–0 in SWC duals during the regular season.
“I am extremely proud of the kids, most all of them ran PR’s,” said Platteville coach Rob Serres. “Cullen was the individual conference champion and that’s a fantastic achievement. He went out and ran a great race. We also had nine all-conference kids.”
The Platteville girls gave it their all but fell short in their attempt to unseat Dodge–Point as the girls’ SWC champion.
The Dodgers had four of the top five finishers, including individual champion Hannah Owens (15:18) and coasted to the team title with 18 points.
Platteville was a distant second with 72 points. Lancaster was third with 100.
Senior Rachel Schwarzmann, a first-year runner on the Platteville team, paced the Platteville girls with an eighth-place finish (16:21.3).
Junior Allie Serres placed 11th in 16:29.8, and fellow junior Holly Kasper finished 14th at 16:35.9.
All three Hillmen runners earned second-team All-SWC honors.
Platteville returns to action this Saturday at the WIAA Division 2 Monroe Sectional. The girls’ race begins at 11 a.m.
