LANCASTER — With six pins, one forfeit and one regular decision, the Lancaster varsity wrestling team upset the River Valley Blackhawks last Friday evening, 45-36, in Southwest Wisconsin Conference dual-meet action.

The Blackhawks, who went into Friday night’s meet ranked eighth in the state’s division 2 field, were coming off a fifth-place finish of 60 teams at the annual Bi-State Classic a week earlier.

Coach Brad Sturmer’s young squad gave up five pins and one forfeit to the Blackhawks, while getting a number of great performances from a number of underclassmen.

Picking up pins in the first period of their respective matches were 145-pound sophomore Owen Wolf, 152-pound sophomore Morgan Seippel and 195-pound freshman Caden Straka. Earning second-period pins were 113-pound freshman Matthew Crosby and 220-pound sophomore Cole Zenz, while 182-pound sophomore Troy Klein had his opponent on his back early in the third period.

A forfeit was awarded to 106-pound sophomore Caleb Lucey, while 138-pound sophomore Collin Lull won his match by a score of 11-5.

“We had a good week of practice and focused on wrestling aggressively, especially on our feet,” said coach Brad Sturmer. “We had a few things go our way, and it ended up being a big win for us,”

On the following Saturday, the Flying Arrows hosted the 51st Annual Lancaster Wrestling Invite, where they finished seventh of 14 competing teams with 92 total points.

Lancaster’s top individual finisher was sophomore Caleb Lucey (12-8), who placed second in the 106-pound class to score 18 points for his team.

Lucey first won a 9-2 decision over Tristen Gilbertson of Belmont/Platteville, then pinned Jayson Starr of Brodhead, advancing him into the championship round. There he suffered a 16-0 technical fall to champion Isaac Cretsinger of Dubuque Senior.

Earning third-place honors were 138-pound sophomore Collin Lull (13-9) and 195-pound freshman Caden Straka (16-7). Lull went 3-1 on the day with two pins and a decision, while Straka went 4-1 on the day with two pins, one regular decision and a major decision.

Fourth-place honors went to 182-pound sophomore Troy Klein (11-8) and 285-pound junior Tyler Hale (10-11), while 126-pound sophomore Dylan Tydrich (3-7) placed fifth and 120-pound sophomore Andrew McCarville (3-10) was sixth.

Winning the team title was Sparta with 201.5 total points, while Iowa-Grant/Highland placed second with 152.5.

This Friday night the Flying Arrows will travel to Richland Center, then will compete in the Westby Tournament on Saturday.
