Hillmen gymastics team headed back to state

     For the third year in a row the Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster gymnastics team will end its season in Wisconsin Rapids at the WIAA Division 2 State Championships.
     The Hillmen earned a return trip last Thursday night by finishing second in their home gym at the D2 Platteville Sectional.
Mt. Horeb won the event with an aggregate score of 140.425, but Coach Jessica Hill’s team was close behind with a 138.05, well ahead of third place Southwestern/Cuba City (129.975).
     The Hillmen will compete in the D2 Team State Championships this Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln Fieldhouse.
     A year ago Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster finished second in Division 2. In 2010 the Hillmen finished third at state.
Juniors Haley Hentrich and Jackie Runde also qualified for Friday’s D2 Individual State Championships, which begin at 5:30. The top five individual finishers and top two teams at sectionals earned state berths.
     Hentrich won the all-around (36.875), the vault (9.275) and floor exercise (9.40), finished second on the balance beam (10.0) and third on the uneven bars (9.20) and qualified for state in all four events.
     Runde finished second in the all-around (39.25), third on the floor (9.20) and fourth on the bars (8.675).
     Courtney Bowen just missed out on a trip to individual state with a sixth place finish on the bars (8.60).
