Junior Nick Tashner erupted for all of his game-high 17 points in the first-half last Tuesday night as the visiting Platteville boys’ varsity basketball team trounced Iowa-Grant 66-28 in a non-conference game at IGHS.
Tashner sank six of his eight first-half field goals attempts, including three of Platteville’s 12 three-pointers.
The red-hot Hillmen made seven triples in the opening-half and raced out to a first-quarter lead of 20-3 and a halftime advantage of 42-7.
Senior guard Garrison Jones scored all seven of his points in the first 16 minutes on a two, a three and a pair of free throws.
Fellow senior Jesse Heer scored five of his 10 points in the second quarter. Heer hit a pair of 3-pointers in the win. Kevin Wruble and Rashad Nelson also hit two 3-pointers each in the Platteville victory and finished with six points apiece.
“We haven’t had real good shooting teams the last two years, but this year’s team can shoot it a little bit,” said Hillmen head coach Mike Huser. “When they get hot they are fun to watch.”
For the game Platteville shot 50.0 percent (22-of-44) from the field and a scorching 70.6 percent (12-17) from behind the arc. Platteville also assisted on 17 of its 22 made baskets.
Senior guard David Bast had four assists to lead the Hillmen, while Heer and Derek Schambow each had three.
Tashner had four rebounds and three assists to go with his 17 points.
Sophomore forward Colin Connor had 12 points to lead the Panthers (0-1), who were playing their season-opener.
“Platteville came out shooting the ball very well and didn’t allow us to take any uncontested shots. We got down early and really didn’t fight to get back into the game,” said Iowa-Grant second-year head coach Toby Tripanlin.
Platteville (1-3) returns to action this Friday with its Southwest Wisconsin Conference opener at Richland Center. Iowa-Grant will travel to Southwestern on Friday.
