VIROQUA — The Platteville golf team placed all five golfers in the top 12 at last Wednesday’s Southwest Wisconsin Conference Championships at Viroqua Hills, but it still wasn’t enough to chase down conference champion River Valley.

The Blackhawks shot a combined 320 to hold off the Hillmen (335) by 15 strokes to claim the conference tournament title as well as the overall SWC championship. Platteville finished second in the final standings with 41 points, six back of River Valley (47). Richland Center (26) was third.

“From the outset of the season Coach Temperly and I knew this was a special group,” said Hillmen head coach John Sponsler. “The team chemistry was apparent on day one and has only gotten better throughout the season. We gave River Valley everything they could handle for the conference title. In the end we finished a little short of our goal but we learned and are optimistic for the future.”

Freshman Isaiah Altfillisch shot an 83 at conference to tie for sixth-place and earn first-team All-SWC honors by virtue of his fifth-place finish in the season-long individual SWC points standings.

Fellow freshman Cade Rohrbach and sophomores Ethan Suits and Zach White tied for eighth at conference with 84s. Junior Alex Traxler carded an 87 to finish 12th. Rohrbach and Traxler finished sixth and seventh in the season-long individual points standings to earn second-team All-SWC honors. Suits and White received honorable mention recognition.

The Hillmen will next compete in the WIAA Division 2 Prairie du Chien regional today.
