For the eighth consecutive year the Platteville girls’ soccer team is queen of the Southwest Wisconsin Conference.
     With a 2–0 victory over visiting River Valley last Tuesday night the Hillmen wrapped up a sixth straight outright conference title and eighth straight overall. (Platteville shared the 2005 and ‘06 titles with Dodgeville).
     “The girls had this as their goal [of winning conference], and I am glad they were able to succeed,” said Hillmen head coach Mary Hardyman. “It was tougher this year, as we worked to reorganize the offense, and different girls have stepped up at different times during the season. Overall, I am pleased with their efforts.”
     Platteville freshman Cassie Hamer broke a scoreless tie early in the second half when she stole the ball from a Dodgeville defender and converted a one-on-one breakaway to give the Hillmen a 1–0 lead at the 41:47 mark of the match.
     Five minutes later senior Jill Wetter added an insurance goal for the home team when fellow senior Maggie Cramer made a beautiful through pass from around midfield, that Wetter ran down, and deposited the score with a hard shot at the goal.
     Junior goalie Ashley Fitzgerald made three saves to record the shutout.
     River Valley fell to 9–10-2 overall and 8–4–1, four games behind Platteville.
     Two nights later the Hillmen improved to 12–4–4 overall and 12–0–1 in the conference with a 6–1 victory over visiting Richland Center.
     Brei Reuter and Melissa Kaiser each scored a pair of goals, while Kimberly Dorsey-Notter and Breanna Brugger added tallies for the winners.
     Platteville, which has struggled in non-conference play going 0–4–3 outside of SWC play, will open the WIAA Division 2 playoffs this Thursday at sixth-seeded Sparta (9–9).
