MONROE — Platteville senior Vince Momot and junior Dan Iselin are going back to the WIAA state cross country meet.

The duo earned two of the five available individual state berths at Friday’s WIAA Division 2 Monroe Sectional.

Momot finished third overall out of 102 runners with a time of 15:29.4. Iselin was close behind, placing sixth with a time of 16:41.3.

The Hillmen were fourth as team with 116 points, behind McFarland (51), Madison Edgewood (75), Monroe (77).

“The boys ran as hard as we could,” said Platteville head coach Rob Serres. “For us to have qualified for state, our fifth man, Tom Lambert would have had to have run the race of a lifetime. He took the chance of going out with our leaders, but just could not hold the pace. The guys ran super. They gave us all they had on the given day.”

Freshman Jace Serres placed 26th at 17:41.3, senior Blake Julius was 28th at 17:47.4 and freshman Calvin Wernimont finished 55th at 18:39.0 to round out Platteville’s scoring team. Lambert finished 58th at 18:47.9 and senior Jackson Gormley was 60th at 18:58.1.

Momot will be making his third trip to state. He finished 21st as a junior and 19th as a sophomore.

Iselin will be making his second state appearance. He placed 94th a year ago as a sophomore when Platteville finished fourth at state as a team.

The boys’ Division 2 race will begin at 2:35 p.m. Saturday at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Platteville girls finished sixth out of 13 teams.

Senior Brelynn Updike broke her own 5,000-meter school record with a time of 20:28.3 to place 13th out of 94 runners.

Sophomore Morgan Wehnke placed 23rd at 21:11.6.
