Reynolds heads back to state
Lancaster senior makes third straight trip to state wrestling meet

Lancaster senior Dustin Reynolds placed second in last Saturdays sectional meet, and will make his third consecutive trip to the WIAA State Meet held this Thursday-Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

MINERAL POINT – Senior Dustin Reynolds will be the lone representative for the Lancaster wrestling team at this year’s WIAA State Tournament, held this Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Reynolds, who advanced to state the last two seasons, finished second in the 152-pound weight class at last Saturday’s Division 3 Mineral Point Sectional. He takes with him a season record of 38-7.

At Saturday’s sectional meet, Reynolds won by technical fall over Byron Brown of Parkview in his opening match.

In the semifinals, Reynolds picked up a 6-2 decision over Jeffry Janzen of Cashton, earning a spot in the championship match.

There with Reynolds was Bradon Roen (27-2) of Riverdale, who handed Reynolds a 3-0 defeat in a hard-fought match for the 152-pound title.

Reynolds then had a wrestleback with Colton Clary (33-9) of Ithaca/Weston, whom he pinned in a time of 5:13.

“Dustin has worked hard for everything he has accomplished,” said Lancaster coach Brad Sturmer. “Three times making the state tournament puts him up there in the ranks of accomplished wrestlers that we’ve ever had here at Lancaster.”

At state, Reynolds will take the mat against Jasper Dunn (30-9) of Whitehall, with the winner moving on to face Mason Kauffman (48-0) of Stratford.

Match action will begin on Thursday night around 7:15, with the next round scheduled to begin Friday morning around 11:15.

Lancaster senior Owen Austin had a sensational wrestling career end at Saturday’s sectional meet, where he placed fourth in the 132-pound weight class, and finished the year with a record of 25-14.

Austin lost his first match of the day, then won his consolation semifinal match before losing the third-place match to Max Maylor (40-7) of Iowa-Grant/Highland, 9-2.

“Owen unfortunately had the toughest bracket in the tournament,” coach Sturmer said. “He had the top three ranked kids in the state in there and only the top three move on.”

“He was up on Maylor, 4-2, in the semis, but couldn’t close the deal. He has a lot to be proud of however,” Sturmer added.

“We talk all the time about it’s not about the results, it is all about the work you put into reaching your goals. He’s worked hard all four years and that work ethic he has developed will pay off for him several times over again the rest of his life.”

Also competing at Saturday’s sectional meet were Lancaster freshmen Collin Lull and Troy Klein.

At 120 pounds, Lull lost his quarterfinal match and his consolation match, leaving him with a season record of 17-17.

At 182 pounds, Klein lost his only match of the day to Conrad Blosch (34-9) of Darlington/Black Hawk, leaving him with a season record of 20-16.

Cassville sophomore Ben Wheeler also competed at Saturday’s sectional meet, and lost his only match of the day to Dalton Utz (27-9) of Waterloo in the heavyweight division. Wheeler finished with year with a record of 14-11.
