The tradition continues
Despite initial rainout, rescheduled Platteville Relays keeps streak alive

Platteville senior Rhett Weber, who has the fifth longest shot put throw in the state so far this year, combined with junior John Skubal to win the shot put relay at last Tuesdays Platteville Relays with a total distance of 96 feet, 7 inches.

With a tradition almost half a century old hanging in the balance Platteville head track coach Rob Serres got a big assist from Lancaster coach Eric Rolland and River Valley coach Joel Block.
When the nine-team Platteville Relays were cancelled due to thunderstorms last Thursday it looked like the annual meets consecutive years streak would end at 46 years. But some quick thinking and collaboration on the part of Serres, Rolland and Block extending Platteville Relays tradition to 47 years and counting.
Rolland agreed to give up a SWC home triangular (with Platteville and River Valley) last Tuesday and bring his Arrows to Platteville instead, and Block followed suit. Cassville was able to compete, and Illinois’ Lena-Winslow was added to the meet and the 47th annual Platteville Relays went on with half the number of original teams.
Platteville dominated the smaller-than-usual meet winning both the boys’ and girls’ team titles, at the unique meet where every event is a realy. Field events combined two teammates and determined placement by their combined distances or heights.
The Hillmen boys scored 92 points to hold off runner-up Lena Winslow (76) and Lancaster (59). The Platteville girls completed the sweep with a 79-48 victory over Lancaster.
Despite the limited field of participants nine records were broken at this year’s event, including six by Platteville.
The Hillmen 4x400 relay of Allie Serres, Julia Lawinger, Laura Donovan and Tricia Serres established a new meet record time of 4:05.87. The same quartet also won the 4x800 relay in a new record time of 9:57.98.
Lawinger, Donovan and Tricia Serres were part of third record, along with senior Tess Stecklein, winning the distance medley relay in 4:17.82.
Senior Tisia Muzinga and freshman Sarah Burton won gold in the 2x100-meter dash shuttle relay, in the process setting a new Relays record of 26.83 seconds.
Megan Moss and Julia Evans also set a meet record by winning the 2x100 hurdle shuttle relay in 35.64 seconds.
Besides the five records, the Platteville girls also won eight other events, including Becca Steck’s victory in the quadrathalon.
On the boys side Alex Schlueter, Alex Niehaus, Ben Kroll and Brad Saunders won the sprint medley relay (1-1-2-4) in a new record time of 1:36.23.
The Hillmen boys also won seven other events including Rhett Weber and John Skubal’s double win in the shot put (96-7) and discus (254-6) relays and Portuguese exchange student Tomas Leitao’s win in the quadrathalon.
The Platteville J.V. teams competed in the Timberwolf Invitational last Friday at River Ridge. Results are listed below.
