Southwest Wisconsin Technical College has received a $2,000 grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation. The funds will be used to support Katie’s Cupboard, the on-campus food pantry for students in need.

“Katie’s Cupboard is a symbol of resilience and community support,” said Angie Herting, director of development and major gifts at Southwest Tech, in the grant application. “Katie’s Cupboard is an on-campus food pantry designed to meet the needs of students who lack the funds to purchase groceries. In many rural communities, the nearest grocery store may be miles away, making access to food a challenge. Katie’s Cupboard ensures that no student goes hungry. This program doesn’t just provide sustenance; it instills a sense of belonging and support within the college community, reinforcing the idea that no one is left behind. The value proposition is about more than just groceries; it’s about solidarity, fostering a supportive environment for all students.” “Alliant Energy is committed to providing exceptional service to our customers and buil d ing s tronger communities,” said Julie Bauer, executive director, Alliant Energy Foundation. “We are proud to support Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and Katie’s Cupboard, as the effort offers an example of our goal to intentionally partner on opportunities that provide diverse perspectives, leading to more equitable outcomes and greater impacts for the communities we serve.”

The Southwest Tech Food Pantry was initiated in 2009 to help students by providing nutritional food support so they can focus on their education. Many individuals, at certain times in their life, encounter short-term financial situations. Food assistance is available to any current Southwest Tech student in need of emergency or supplemental food. The name of the food pantry was recently changed from the Chargers Cupboard to Katie’s Cupboard, in honor of the late-Katie Garrity, a longtime administrator on campus. Most recently, she served as executive advisor to the president.

The inventory in Katie’s Cupboard is dependent on donations and groceries purchased/received through Second Harvest of Madison. Depending on inventory that is available, students are allowed one or two bags of groceries each week.
