The Green Bay Packers performed well on the field this season (after week eight of the NFL season especially), and although their season has come to an end, their off the field performance continues.
This past November, the Green Bay Packers Foundation distributed a record $1.5 million in annual grants to 321 civic and charitable groups throughout the state of Wisconsin in its annual distribution of grants.
Grants, totaling $1,310,500, were made to 321 groups around the state.
“We’re proud to award a record $1.5 million through our annual Packers Foundation grants this
year,” said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. “The recipient organizations are incredibly dedicated to their communities, serving some of our most vulnerable neighbors. We are honored to recognize and support their impactful and crucial work.”
This grant cycle focused on organizations that will direct the funds toward the need areas of elderly, homelessness, human services and hunger.
The Depot Exchange Thrift Store and Food Pantry on Lincoln Avenue, here in Fennimore, was one of those recipients. The Depot Exchange Board applied for, and was awarded $4,000 in grant money for the Green Bay Packers Foundation.
According to JoAnn Wiederholt, Depot Exchange board member and volunteer, stated they applied for the grant for two reasons.
Number one being to address some issue in their food pantry. According to JoAnn, and the pantry had old carpet that was in need for replacing and the pantry was experiencing water issues in the floor and drywall.
Thanks to the grant, those issues have been addressed and the much needed updates to the food pantry have just recently been finished.
Shelly Hartline, food pantry manager, stated “food pantry pickups are on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. JoAnn added that “we never ask for proof of need for those who request it.”
The second item the grant money received will go towards will be new signage near the entrance of the Depot Exchange.
The current “small sign,” simply just states the Depot’s open hours.
The new, much bigger sign will still include the open hours, but will also include where the food pantry is located, and directions to the back of the Depot Exchange, where items can be donated.
The thrift store is open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The store is closed on Sundays.
