Library settles in to its home away from home
Library new home

After two moves and a week closed, the Dwight T. Parker Public Library opened back this past Monday, Aug. 11 and its temporary location in the former High Point Family Medicine Clinic building, 1255 11th Street, located behind Hartig Drug.

The 11th Street location will be the library’s home for the next year while its expansion project is underway.

“We had planned on moving at the end of this month,” Dwight T. Parker Public Library Director Cathy Smith stated. “But the contractors asked if we could move a little earlier so they could get started even earlier.”

Smith stated the moving process went fairly smoothly with community volunteers, a mix of adults and Fennimore Middle/High School students helping on July 30, and the entire Fennimore Golden Eagles football team helping last Wednesday.

Of course with the smaller spaces, many of the library’s materials had to go into storage. Smith stated storage was generously donated by Krantz Hardware.

“We will carry a small percentage of our newer book collection,” Smith explained. “But we will continue to add and receive new releases and materials.”

The library will have two rooms with children’s materials, and will have two spaces for public computer use, as well as wifi in the building. Printing, copying, and faxing services are also still available.

“We were able to have more materials here than planned,” Smith went on to say. “I’m sure we’ll make some tweaks as we go over the next few weeks.”

The Dwight T. Parker Public Library’s hours will remain the same during their hiatus from their “home base.”

Monday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, noon to 6 p.m.; Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. The library is closed on Sundays.
