Moonlight Gardens is hidden treasure in Kieler
story 3

KIELER, Wis. – Hidden in plain sight in Kieler, Wisconsin, is Moonlight Gardens, a unique combination of an expansive garden and waterfall. The property located on Walnut Court, is owned by Dave and Cathy Holland.

The project began in 2017 and took two years to finish. The original piece of land held old railroad ties. It was transformed into a garden, full of fruits and vegetables, and a specially-designed waterfall. The Hollands worked with Forget-Me-Not-Landscaping in Dubuque, Iowa.

The garden includes a wide variety of produce, including pickles, celery, green peppers, watermelons, sweet corn, strawberries, onions, cabbage, beets, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, zucchini, and more. “We are both big gardeners,” said Dave.

Much of the produce is donated to area seniorcare facilities, including in Cuba City, Platteville, and Dickeyville. “Nothing goes to waste here,” said Dave.

They also have grapevines and 42-year-old apple trees. The apples are used to make pie fillings, while the grapes are used to make juice and jam.

Flowers also adorn the property, as well as tall sunflowers.

Adjoining the garden is a small barn, which houses a lawn mower and hanging garlic. According to Dave, the process from planting to harvesting the garlic takes approximately one year.

Bringing the scene together is an array of colored lights that shine on the area during the night.
