The Gays Mills Farmers Market opened on May 16 and will be held each Wednesday through October 10, from 2:30 to 6 p.m. rain or shine in Lions Park near the bridge. Come early for best choices.

Customers have already been buying herbs, leafy greens, asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, and preserved jams, jellies, beans and beets, as well as shiitake mushrooms, honey, and maple syrup. Farmers expect to be bringing berries, peas and beans soon.

They've still got supplies of bedding plants, including herbs, vegetables and flowers. And the market is making plans for a mid-June celebration that will include veggie tastings, a chance for customers to paint gourd birdhouses, music by local artists, and the drawing for a $20 shopping spree. Customers still have time to drop their names into the jar for the drawing, to be held at the start of the market on June 13.

Anyone interested in selling at the market is asked to visit the website. Vendors must apply and be approved in advance.

More details on the market, including guidelines, FAQs, vendor profiles and favorite recipes, are currently available at www.gaysmillsfarmersmarket.com
