Bulldogs open SWAL play with win over Riverdale at Milwaukee Bucks’ Fiserv Forum
MILWAUKEE — The Boscobel girls basketball team had the opportunity of a lifetime when it opened SWAL play against Riverdale at the Milwaukee Bucks’ Fiserv Forum last Monday afternoon.
The Bulldogs hit eight 3-pointers in the second half to rally for a 60–54 victory to take sole possession of first place in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League.
“We went to the Fizer Forum in Milwaukee to take on Riverdale Monday afternoon as part of the Bucks Prep series,” said Bosocbel head coach Erik Kinney. “It was a great experience for the girls team. Both schools were well represented. We had over 80 fans make the trip to watch the girls play.”
Macy McKay scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the Chieftains to a 28–19 halftime lead.
“We were in some foul trouble and some of our starters sat a lot of minutes in the first half,” said Kinney. “We had some of our younger kids stepup and play valuable minutes to keep the score within reach at halftime.”
Junior Avery Updike scored nine of her team-high 20 points in the first half to keep Boscobel in the game.
“We fell behind by as many as 14 points in the second half of the game, but we started getting stops on defense and the offense started clicking,” said Kinney. “We hit eight big 3-point shots in the second half to cut into the lead.”
Boscobel took a 52–47 late in the game, before Riverdale scored five straight to tie the game. But the Bulldogs regrouped and finished the game on an 8–2 run to pull out the win.
Updike hit three 3-pointers in the second half —four in the game —to lead the rally.
Fellow junior Kylee Johnson had 13 points, all in the second half because of foul trouble, and Maya Baumeister hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the winners.
Senior Addison Rounds continued to dominate the glass as she recorded her third game in a row with double-digit rebounds, with 12, to go along with five points.
Kira Kinney had four points, Hannah Dilley hit a three and freshman Tuff Ward had a three points.
“I give our girls a ton of credit,” added Kinney. “They were very resilient and willed us to victory. We outscored Riverdale 41-26 in the second half. Hitting 12 3-point shots in the game was huge and we made just enough free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. Overall, it was a great experience for our kids to play on the NBA floor and take in an NBA game later that evening.”
BULLDOGS DOMINATE RICHLAND CENTER FOR THIRD WIN
Boscobel extended our win streak to three games with a 48–30 non-conference win over Richland Center last Tuesday night.
“We were coming off a long night as we did not get back from Milwaukee until midnight,” said Kinney. “I was a little concerned we might have a let down after a hard fought game, long bus ride, and very little sleep. But the girls came out ready to play. It took us a little bit to get the offense rolling, but we were able to take a 35–16.” halftime lead.
Aubrey Seep, Updike and Johnson all hit a big 3-point basket during Boscobel’s first-half run, and Baumeister hit a pair of triples in the first half.
Johnson had a game-high 16 points, four rebounds and four steals to lead the Bulldogs. Rounds added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Baumeister chipped in nine points.
Boscobel traveled to winless Seneca (0–4) Tuesday night. Kinney’s Bulldogs will now travel to Iowa–Grant (0–2) tonight for another SWAL conference game before traveling to River Valley (2–1) Tuesday night.
