Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Boys Division 5 All-Star Game: White 105, Black 97

Uppena family leads White all-stars to a 105–97 win in Division 5 boys game
WISCONSIN DELLS —  Featuring the top senior girls and boys basketball players from throughout the state, the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Games were held June 25–26 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

The WBCA All-Star Games not only feature the top senior basketball players from throughout the state, but also raise money that supports five charities that include Garding Against Cancer, the MACC Fund, Ronald McDonald House, Camp Waubeek (Easter Seals) and Hometown Heroes. Since their inception in 1978, the WBCA All-Star Games have raised more than $300,000.

The Boys All-Star action tipped off Thursday, June 26 with the Division 5 game, which featured three area coaches and two area players. Led by the coaching trio of Scott Uppena, Tom Uppena and Mike Uppena, the Division 5 White All-Stars pulled out a 105–97 victory over the Black All-Stars last Thursday morning.

Scott Uppena of Royall served as head coach of the D5 White All-Stars, while brothers Tom Uppena of Darlington and Mike Uppena of Potosi, served as his assistants. Playing for the D5 White All-Stars were Aidan Uppena and Dawson Weber of Potosi, along with Carter Uppena of Royall and Wes Kraisinger of Highland.

While Almond–Bancroft’s Ayden Phillips led the White All-Stars with 20 points, Aidan Uppena chipped in 14, Kraisinger scored 10, Carter Uppena had nine and Weber finished with two. Playing for the D5 Black All-Stars, Highland’s Michael Esser scored 11 points in the loss.

 In the Division 4 Boys All-Star game, the White team defeated the Black squad, 106–86. Serving as head coach of the D4 Black All-Stars was Fennimore’s Troy Larson, along with assistant coaches Coby Zwiefelhofer, also of Fennimore, and Shawn Dailey of Iowa–Grant. Among those playing for the D4 Black All-Stars were Fennimore’s Evan Larson, who scored four points in the loss, and Mineral Point’s Eli Lindsey, who chipped in five points.

Playing for the D4 White All-Stars was Jaxson Wendhausen of Mineral Point, who scored nine points in the victory.

The Division 3 Boys All-Star game saw the Black squad defeat the White team, 119–82. Head coach of the D3 Black All-Stars was Luke Thatcher of River Valley, along with assistant coaches Darby Blakley, also of River Valley, and Clinton Nemitz of Southwestern. The only area player in Division 3 was Platteville’s Lucas Ludlum, who scored four points for the Black All-Stars.

Thursday’s All-Star action concluded with the Black team defeating the White squad 109–90 in the Division 2 All-Star contest, and the White team knocking off the Black squad, 96–93, in the D1 game.

Among the assistant coaches for the Division 1 Black All-Star team was Platteville girls head coach Brandon Temperly.

The WBCA All-Star Games began Wednesday, June 25 when the Division 5 South girls defeated the North squad, 79—68.

Among the area athletes playing for the D5 South squad were Belmont’s Freeman, Black Hawk’s Maddy Lange and Shullsburg’s Taylor Russell. While Russell scored seven points for the South All-Stars, Freeman chipped in three and Lange did not score. The D5 South squad was led by Cali Havlovitz of Wild Rose, who scored 17 points, and was followed by Dalana Trumpy of Albany/Monticello with 10 and Abby Hollis, also of Albany/Monitcello, with nine.

In the Division 4 Girls All-Star game, Cuba City’s Dea Crist and Emily Wiegman helped lead the South All-Stars to a 77—51 victory over the North. Bangor’s Anna Frank scored a game-high 14 points to lead the South All-Stars, while Crist chipped in 12 points and Wiegman nine.

The Division 3 Girls All-Star game featured a trio of area athletes from the Southwest Wisconsin Conference in Prairie du Chien’s Tessa Czajkowski and Tannah Radloff, along with Platteville’s Berntgen. With Czajkowski and Radloff each scoring seven points, and Berntgen five, the South All-Stars defeated their opponent from the North, 79º51.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Madeline Leffel scored a game-high 16 points to lead the South, followed by 14 points from Catholic Memorial’s Hallie Koltz and 10 points from Watertown Luther Prep’s Elenor Wendorff.

Prairie du Chien’s Paula Shedivy served as the head coach of the D3 South All-Stars, along with assistant coaches Paul Carroll, also of Prairie du Chien, and Brian Heubner of Westby.

Wednesday’s festivities concluded with the Division 2 North All-Stars and Division 1 North All-Stars defeating the South, by the identical score of 72–59.
