PLATTEVILLE – The Six Rivers Conference titles came home with the Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg boys’ and girls’ track and field teams for the fifth year in a row.
The Zephyrs won nine of the 18 events, earned a place in the top five in every event and placed two or more competitors in the top five in 10 events to roll to the boys’ championship crown with 227 points; while the Lady Zephyrs won eight events and had a place winner in 14 with two or more place winners in seven of those events to snag the girls’ title with 152 points at the 2017 Six Rivers Conference Meet held at UW-Platteville on Monday, May 15.
“Hats off to all of our assistant coaches for having their athletes ready to go and compete at such a high level,” said BSMS head coach Paul Raley. “The depth of our boys’ team really showed today. I don’t think anyone who competed placed lower than a fifth-place. That doesn’t happen very often.
It really became a total team effort for the girls’ team to pull this one off.  We really had to piece together some relays and events today due to injuries. When you win by single digits, every point matters. All of the girls can be proud of their efforts and willingness to step up for the team. This one goes down as the true team effort.”
Albany was runner-up with 161.5 points in the boys’ meet and 143 in the girls’ meet, while River Ridge placed third in both meets with 81.5 and 134 points, respectively.
Belmont placed fifth in the boys’ meet with 52 points and eighth in the girls’ meet with 22 points, and Black Hawk placed ninth in each meet with 22 points for the girls’ team and five points for the boys’ squad.
Senior Jeremiah Bailey claimed four individual titles for the Zephyrs after sweeping the hurdle races with winning times of 16.81 seconds in the 110 high hurdles and 43.12 in the 300 intermediate hurdles and adding first-place finishes in the high jump (6’0”) and the triple jump (39’9”).
Senior Ben Sigwarth won the boys’ long jump (19’11.75’), and junior David Germaine won the 400-meter dash (52.65) for the Zephyrs. Sigwarth joined with Aaron Coffey, Lance Lierman and Alan Montanye to take first in the 400 relay (46.79) and teamed with Montayne, Ethan Shetler and Aaron Pulvermacher to win the 800 relay (1:37.95), while Germaine, Shetler and Pulvermacher combined with Caleb O’Neill to win the 1,600 relay (3:37.49).
Belmont junior Jacob Wedig was a dual conference champion with first-place performances in the shot put (52’5”) and the discus (150’4”), and the Braves’ 3,200-meter relay team of Isaac Wiegel, Josh Adams, Andrew Weber and Seth Peters added a Six Rivers’ title (8:55.72) at the meet.
“I could not be more proud of my team last night,” said Belmont head coach Amber Eisele. “Jake threw the shot and disc very well and came close to breaking the meet record, and the boys 4x800 blew me away again. They keep cutting their time down and they are one step closer to getting that school record, which is their goal.”
Black Hawk sophomore Jared Vosberg placed seventh in the 400 (58.52) and the 110 high hurdles (19.93) to lead the Warriors.
BSMS junior Emma Lawrence set a new conference record in the girls’ 300-meter low hurdles with her winning time 46.33 seconds and she added firsts in the 100 high hurdles (16.35) and the triple jump (34’0.5”) to lead the Lady Zephyrs.
Senior Paige Murphy also earned three titles with firsts in the 100 (13.16), long jump (15’10.75”) and the 400 meter relay (54.28) along with freshmen Chloe Matthews and Calli Jerry and junior Kristy Kruger. Murphy also placed second in the 200 (27.45).
Junior Brianna Leahy was a dual conference champion with titles in the girls’ shot put (40’2”) and the discus (122’11”).
Belmont sophomore Elsie de Haan was third in the discus (104’5”) and sixth in the shot put (30’2”) to lead the Lady Braves.
“All the team members did awesome. Some had some personal best and they all gave it their best shot.  This year’s team has just been getting better and better,” Eisele noted.
Black Hawk junior Haley Gertsch placed second in the 400 (1:01.54), third in the 100 (13.44) and fourth in the 800 (2:39.91) to pace the Warriors.
“I am very happy with their efforts. We added five new personal bests. You can’t ask for much more than that. There were a few other season bests,” said Black Hawk head coach Kristina Rynes.
The 2017 WIAA Division 3 regional track and field meet will be held at Cuba City High School on Monday, May 22, beginning at 3 p.m. The top four competitors in each event advance to sectional competition.
