Hentrich battles for MVP honors
Lancaster senior takes control of top spot in SWC individual standings
Josh Hentrich
Lancasters Josh Hentrich moved into first place in the SWC individual golf standings after shooting a 37 at the Dodge/Point Country Club this past Monday night.

Lancaster senior Josh Hentrich has put together a late push for the Southwest Wisconsin Conference boys’ golf MVP honor, where he recently took over the top spot with medalist honors in two of his team’s last three meets.

Hentrich, who went into this past Tuesday night’s SWC meet in Platteville with 139.5 conference points, moved two points ahead of River Valley senior Derek Wedige and 10 points ahead of Isaac Lange, also of River Valley.

Regardless of what happens at the Platteville meet, the league MVP honor will most certainly be decided at the May 16 conference meet held at Spring Green.

Last Tuesday night is when Hentrich began making his move to the top of the individual standings, claiming medalist honors at the House on the Rock Resort with a two-over-par round of 38.

Unfortunately he had to share the medalist honors with Wedige and Lange, both of whom were playing on their home course.

As a team, Lancaster tied for fourth place with a score of 191, getting a 47 from junior Dillon Marshall, a 51 from sophomore Isaac Farrey and a 55 from junior Jalen Schmitz, while fellow junior Evan Gates shot a 57.

Just two nights later, the Flying Arrows played at Quail Run Golf Course in Richland Center, where they placed fifth as a team with a score of 185.

Hentrich won medalist honors to pick up 30 points after shooting a 36, while Marshall finished with a 48, Gates a 50, Schmitz a 51 and Farrey a 60.

This past Monday evening, the Flying Arrows competed at the Dodge/Point Country Club, where they shot their best team score of the year with a 161, tying River Valley for second place behind Platteville (150).

Hentrich, who shot a 37 on the par-34 front nine, finished third behind Lange of River Valley and Isaiah Altfillisch of Platteville, both of whom shot one stroke better. Wedige finished Monday meet with a 39, leaving him tied for eight place and giving up 5.5 points to Hentrich.

Rounding out Lancaster’s scores from Monday’s meet was Marshall with a 40, Farrey a 41, Gates a 43 and Schmitz a 49.

If Hentrich can capture the 2017 SWC MVP honor, he will become only the third Lancaster golfer to do so in the past 11 seasons, as his brother Zach did it in 2012 and 2013, and Andrew Gates did so in 2015.

The Flying Arrows sent five golfers to last Saturday’s Viroqua Invite, where they finished 12th with a score of 403.

Hentrich placed 15th overall with a round of 83, while Marshall finished with a 96 and Farrey a 105. Playing in their first varsity meet of the season, freshman Connor Gates shot a 119 and sophomore Payton Lowling a 125.

This Friday, the Flying Arrows will participate in the Reedsburg Invite, then will play in the annual Southwest Cup held on Saturday at the Dodge/Point Country Club.

The conference meet, which counts double toward individual and team points, is next Tuesday in Spring Green.
