PLATTEVILLE - With their families looking on members of the Platteville/Lancaster boys’ swim team made Parents’ Night 2011 one to remember with a convincing 94-74 non-conference dual meet victory over visiting La Crosse last Thursday night at the UW-Platteville natatorium.
The Hillmen won seven of the night’s 11 varsity races and had six second place finishes.
“I was very happy with how we swam. We had several season best times and our placings were well distributed between the team members, which is an indication that our depth is getting better,” said Hillmen head coach Tom Caccia.
Nine different Hillmen earned first-place finishes or were on a first-place relay.
Platteville sophomore Ben Bahr was the night’s brightest Hillmen star setting a new meet record of 1:08.16 to win the 100-yard breaststroke.
Bahr also teamed with Jake Fulton, Jordan Kress and Ryan Murray to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:55.19.
Lancaster junior Nicholas Volkmann won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:25.43 and combined with Ryan Heberlein, Wade Roberts and Brenden Polkinghorn to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.79). Heberlein won the 50 free in 24.98 seconds.
Fulton won the 100 backstroke in 1:10.50 and Platteville senior Jake Adams won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:51.39.
Platteville/Lancaster improved to 3-1 overall and are 2-0 in Southern Lakes Conference duals heading into next Tuesday’s (Jan. 3) conference triple dual at conference-leading Elkhorn.
On Thursday, Jan. 5, the Hillmen will host Rockford Christian from Rockford, Ill. with a non-conference dual meet at UW-Platteville beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Finally, on Saturday, Jan. 7, the team travels to Rockford for the Rockford Auburn Relays at Auburn High School.

RICHLAND CENTER — Sophomore Kylie Burns converted three straight free throws with 3.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Richland Center Hornets a 55-54 non-conference win here Tuesday night.

The win was the Hornets’ first of the season and ended a 45-game losing streak dating back to the end of the 2022–23 campaign.

“They never gave up,” said coach Jeremy Kooi of his team which fought back from an early 12-point deficit

The Hornets rallied to pull within 27–21 at the half and finally tied the game midway through the second half. The lead changed hands several times down the stretch before Regan Schoepp scored from close range to put the Hornets ahead 47–45. Viroqua freshman Allyah Schwenn quickly penetrated and scored to tie the game, 47–47, and force overtime.

In the extra period, Burns accounted for all eight of the Hornets’ points with a three-pointer and five of five from the free throw line.

Ella Weiss led the Hornets in scoring with 22 points while Burns finished with 16. Jaycee Gander netted six, Carley Mieden five, Schoepp four and Jasmine Hazlerig two.

Schwenn topped all scorers with 24 points for Viroqua. Emily Hubatch scored 14 and Emma Moilien had 10.
