Lancaster senior takes fifth at sectional after winning medalist honors at regional meet

Lancaster senior Brooke Marcue was one of three individual qualifiers from the Division 2 Wisconsin Dells Sectional, where she shot a 91 and placed fifth.

WISCONSIN DELLS – Lancaster senior Brooke Marcue will be concluding her prep golf career in style at the WIAA State Meet held at University Ridge Golf Course next Monday and Tuesday in Madison.

Marcue, who was a member of last year’s sectional qualifying team, placed fifth overall at this past Monday’s Division 2 Wisconsin Dells Sectional and was the third of three individual qualifiers advancing to state.

Playing at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin Dells, Marcue shot a seven-over-par round of 43 on the Arbor Course, then finished with a 12-over-par round of 48 on the Lake Course, for an 18-hole score of 91.

On the Arbor Course, Marcue shot par on four holes, bogied four and tripled the par-4 sixth.

On the Lake Course, Marcue shot par on two holes, while taking a bogey on four, doubling two and taking a seven on the par-3 sixth.

Medalist honors went to Aquinas sophomore Annie Balduzzi, who shot an impressive round of 79, while the Bluegolds took top team honors with a score of 377. The second-place team advancing to state was Arcadia, who shot a 381.

Joining Marcue as the three individual state qualifiers not on a qualifying team were Edgewood Sacred Heart freshman Grace Welch with an 86, and Stanley-Boyd senior Katie Kiraly with an 89.

Also competing at Monday’s sectional meet was fellow Lancaster senior Brandi Taylor, who shot a 104 and finished tied for 26th of 47 golfers.

Taylor was also a member of last year’s sectional qualifying team, and concluded an outstanding prep career at this year’s sectional meet.

Marcue and Taylor advanced to Monday’s sectional meet after finishing among the top four individuals not on a qualifying team to come out of the Edgewood Regional held at Odana Hills Golf Club in Madison last Wednesday.

Marcue took medalist honors at the regional meet with an impressive round of 90, while Taylor tied for ninth overall at 104.

As a team, the Flying Arrows placed fifth with a score of 454, getting a 105 from sophomore Lindsey Wolf and a 155 from junior Sydney Kwallek.

Teams advancing from the Edgewood Regional included: Edgewood Sacred Heart, Darlington, Southwestern/Benton/Cuba City and Edgerton.

Richland Center girls snap 45-game losing streak

RICHLAND CENTER — Sophomore Kylie Burns converted three straight free throws with 3.2 seconds left in overtime to give the Richland Center Hornets a 55-54 non-conference win here Tuesday night. 

The win was the Hornets’ first of the season and ended a 45-game losing streak dating back to the end of the 2022–23 campaign.

“They never gave up,” said coach Jeremy Kooi of his team which fought back from an early 12-point deficit 

The Hornets rallied to pull within 27–21 at the half and finally tied the game midway through the second half. The lead changed hands several times down the stretch before Regan Schoepp scored from close range to put the Hornets ahead 47–45. Viroqua freshman Allyah Schwenn quickly penetrated and scored to tie the game, 47–47, and force overtime.

In the extra period, Burns accounted for all eight of the Hornets’ points with a three-pointer and five of five from the free throw line. 

Ella Weiss led the Hornets in scoring with 22 points while Burns finished with 16. Jaycee Gander netted six, Carley Mieden five, Schoepp four and Jasmine Hazlerig two.

Schwenn topped all scorers with 24 points for Viroqua. Emily Hubatch scored 14 and Emma Moilien had 10. 

The Hornets were 19 of 30 from the free throw line while Viroqua converted 15 of 29 but only three of six in overtime.
