Anhydrous ammonia leak forces cleanup after tank falls off trailer on 78

Six different fire departments, ambulance services and hazardous-material teams were called for a truck trailer leaking anhydrous ammonia Saturday afternoon.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department, Daniel G. Langkamp, 60, Darlington, was driving north on Wisconsin 78 in the Town of Wiota pulling a trailer with a mounted storage tank around 1:10 p.m.

As Langkamp was negotiating a curve, the tank, filled with anhydrous ammonia, began swaying and broke from the trailer, and began leaking.

The Wiota and Woodford fire departments, Darlington Fire Department and Grant–Jo Daviess hazmat teams, Rural Medical Ambulance in Darlington and Argyle Ambulance were called to assist with the cleanup.

Traffic was detoured from the area for part of the afternoon.

No injuries were reported.
