A 37-year-old Benton man faces charges after a high-speed chase ended in a crash west of Benton early Sunday morning.

John J. Scanlan is facing charges of felony eluding, first-offense drunk driving and a seat belt violation.

The chase began when a Grant County sheriff’s deputy attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle heading north on Wisconsin 80 south of Wisconsin 11 around 1 a.m. that had passed the deputy at 87 mph.

When the deputy tried to stop the vehicle, it turned east onto 11, and speeds increased to 100 mph, according to the sheriff’s department.

The car appeared to be trying to turn from 11 onto Whaley Road when the vehicle went off the right shoulder, went airborne, overturned several times, and stopped on its roof in a bean field.

Scanlan was taken to a Dubuque hospital by Hazel Green EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.
