SMELSER — Grant County authorities are investigating a shooting that took place at 1139 Rock Road south of Platteville Tuesday night.

Robert Hess, 34, Janesville, was shot in the stomach around 9:20 p.m., according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. Hess was taken by Platteville EMS to Southwest Health Center, then was taken via MedFlight helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison. He is in “good condition with no life-threatening injuries,” a Sheriff’s Department news release said.

Hess was a witness to a confrontation between Jeremy Stonestreet, 35, Mineral Point, and Sean Fortney, 38, Platteville, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Fortney threw a rock through the rear window of Stonestreet’s vehicle, then Stonestreet fired a 9mm handgun, shooting Hess in the stomach.

Stonestreet fled the scene, then was taken into custody by Mineral Point police last night. He is being held without bond in the Grant County jail on a pending charge of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Platteivlle Fire Department, and by the Iowa County Sheriff's Department.
