PHS, UWP graduate gets Cal doctorate

BERKELEY, Calif. — Brooke L. Soles, daughter of Bill and Judy Soles of Platteville, earned her Doctor of Education at University of California in the Leadership in Educational Equity Program in May.

Soles graduated from Platteville High School in 1992 and UW–Platteville in 1996. She spent a semester in Seville, Spain, became an AmeriCorps participant in San Francisco’s Housing Rights Program in 1997, and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras from 1998 to 2000.

Soles was a legal assistant at the immigration law office of Marc Van deer Hout, Brigagliano & Nightingale LLP, in San Francisco. She taught in the Los Angeles and San Francisco school districts, and was an assistant principal at Philip Burton Academic High School in San Francisco. She is now the principal at the K–12 Los Angeles Leadership Academy.

Soles’ dissertation focused on creating a safer school culture through action and implementation of the Slurs Hurt Us: Safety and Health lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students at school program.

Soles lives in Venice Beach, Calif.
